How Interchangeable are 36 hole rims?

This may be a stupid question, but. . .

Dad's got a 1994 CR 125 and the front rim has small crack in it.

He replaced his rear rim with an excel and ended up having to buy all new spokes because the stock spokes wouldn't fit the excel.

I've been looking on e b a y and have seen several good deals - last night a complete 1995 cr 250 wheel sold for $30 shipped - but I wasn't sure if it would fit.

Now I'm seeing wheels or 21x1.60 rims from everything from a 1987 CR500 up to a 2005 KX250f selling for reasonable prices.

He's looking for anything that isn't cracked - he doesn't jump and does little more than ride trails rather slowly.

Do you think most 36 hole stock 21x1.60 rims would lace up with his spokes and hub?

Thanks

Rob.

If the rim and the hub are both 36 hole, they should lace up. The only difference may be the spoke angle. If you use a three cross spoke configuration you may have to re-drill the rim for the increased spoke angle but other than that it should work.
