How many miles can you go on a KLX300R engine (or other 4 stroke engines) before requiring a new top end? Given that the bike was maintained well? I'm looking at a used one that has a little over 4,000 miles on it. It was ridden fairly hard on trails but the owner changed all the fluids, checked the valves, and cleaned the air filter very often.

What would be a good price for the bike? 2004 KLX300R. Anything I should look out for? Cosmetically, the bike is in average condition for someone who rides a lot. Not shiny or anything but not beat up either. It's got scratches n such.

Thanks!

On a bike like that, unless it runs poorly or smokes it's probly fine. You can do a compression and leak-down check to know for sure. They can run for a very long time with little more than oil and air filter service. The rpm range it was ridden in will have the most impact on longevity. I'm not very familiar with that bike, but I'm going to assume it's not a high revving engine. Unless the guy beat the snot of it, it should be fine.

In general, is 4000 miles a lot of miles for a dirt bike though? From the looks of it, it looks like he rode it hard on the trails.

On TT forums I've seen a post where someone put 65,000 miles on an XR650R....

I bet you had to push that XR650R down a real big hill to get it started with 65,000 miles on it!

there is only one reason it has 65,000 miles on it, and that is because it is a XR. I agree though 4000 miles is about due for a top end. It really depends on how the bike was ridden. If he rode it easy then im sure you could get some more out of it.
