how to set the timing ona 1981 honda xl?

I recently done a top end rebuild on my 1981 honda xl 185s and I can't get it to run because I dont know how to set the timing. I was told it was 180 degrees out, but I dont know how to set the timing. Should the piston be top dead center before starting? I am lost, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There are timing marks that need to be lined up properly. Your best bet is to invest in a manual that will show you exactly how to do the job.
