how to set timing on 98 XR100???

I am about to start tearing into my new bike, i have to take off the head, but need to make sure i have the procedure to put it back together... How do you go about setting the timing once you have the timing belt off? any links would be appreciated.

May I suggest that you purchase a service manual. It will be money well spent and you will have a heck of a time finding the timing belt without it. :eek: :thumb:

I have already found the timing CHAIN, sorry, i refferred to my bike as my car, which has a belt... Well, i guess that its off to pull the bike apart and learn how to set the timing...

When you set your cam timing, your piston must be at top dead center, There will be a mark on your flywheel to indicate this. Also, you can stick a skinny screwdriver in the spark plug hole and (Carefully), feel the top of the piston to be sure. Rock the crank back and forth to feel when the piston is on top. Make sure the flywheel mark lines up. The flywheel mark should have a 'T' next to it.

Then, look at your cam. Both cam lobes, (The bumps on the cam that open the valves), must point down directly at the piston, equally. There should be a mark or two on the cam chain sprocket. This mark should line up with a mark on the cylinder head. Not sure if there are one or two marks on the cam wheel, that is why I suggested getting a manual.

Thank you very much, i appreciate that a lot. I think i figured out how my friend killed it, the guy who was riding it broke the exhaust a couple days before this happened, and was riding it with just 4 inches of pipe, i didnt realize that he was did this till i sat down and reallythought about it, now it makes sence i think,i know in a car if you start it and run it for any amount of time with no exhaust you will burn up valves, which is what happened here. So i still need to know how to set the timing, my neighbor works at the honda (bike) dealership and is going to get me a price on having the valve seats reground and new valves put in. Let hope its not too much...
