30 miles north of Grand Rapids the ice is thick enough - we have shantys and the normal bunch of ice fishermen out already and the occasional snowsled too (but not for long - read below).
but
it's been a bad year so far to actually make a track with lots of wet snow/water/ice and layers of each. It has not been good ice.
I thought with the last thaw it might get rid of the layers and freeze solid but so far not at shore at least - I haven't ventured out further in the past several days.
