Well,I thought I bought an 01 400EXC but now I'm not so sure.The bike has 01 decals(easily changed,I know),wider levers than 00 2smoke I had and an airfilter cage with three mounting tabs.My 00 2smoker had only one tab on the airfilter cage and the 2 and 4 strokes are supposed to be the same.The VIN# says it's an 00 so it's either a factory mixup or a dedicated effort to trick the new owner(me)into thinking I got an 01.What other differences are there between the 00 and 01 400EXCs?

Does it have a month in front of the "00"? My tag on my bike says "9/95" but is a 96' model. If it has a month it is most likely the manufacturing date and not the model year. If it is in the VIN number and you looked up the code for it, then I would say it is an "00"

For EXC models (don't know about MX bikes):
The 10th digit of the VIN tells you the model year. A '01 model should have a 1 there, a '02 a 2. 2000 was Z, when I remember correctly.
The 10th digit coding is the same as the one used by the automotive manufacturers, so when you are in doubt which letter means what year you can ask your local GM dealer.

I was wrong 200o was Y in the 10th digit!
Harley uses the same system btw. In detail:

B = 1981 J = 1988 S = 1995
C = 1982 K = 1989 T = 1996
D = 1983 L = 1990 V = 1997
E = 1984 M = 1991 W = 1998
F = 1985 N = 1992 X = 1999
G = 1986 P = 1993 Y = 2000
H = 1987 R = 1994

The 01 RFS's came with wider radiators than the '00. This means that there is no black spacer between the radiator and the shroud. Also, black fork guards and the front axle nut is has a collar that goes into the clamping piece on the fork leg. Unfortunaltey, both had a clear tank. Good luck. That VIN # trick is your best bet.

You are probably looking at the build date when you say "00" in the VIN. There is a very good chance that is was built in 2000 if it is an 01. My 2001 400EXC was an 06/00 build bike. Is the seat cover orange or black? The 01s came with the crappy orange seat cover that delaminated and the 00s had a black one very similar to the ones used on the 03s.

No, it's definetely the model year! Bikes built until Summer 03 will be marked "3", after the summer holidays starts the production of the "4" models.

It turns out that it IS an 01 but the VIN on the bike is different from the paperwork.The dealer that that the bike came from is out of business.Great.How might I obtain another certificate of origin or maybe a title from the DMV?

What do you mean, the VIN is different from the paperwork?
Sounds suspicious to me! Not that they have sold you a stolen bike or something like that!
