Day-one is in the books and Team USA's Junior Trophy Team's battle to get back on the podium, after their third place finish last year in Portugal, may be in jeopardy as Cory Buttrick was injured during the last transfer section of the day.

It sounds like Buttrick was making a pass on another rider that had motioned him by when that rider swerved as Buttrick was passing, forcing him off the trail and into a ravine at will traveling at a significant speed. Details are sketchy at this point as Buttrick wasn't able to recall everything that happened.

Buttrick had helped lead the charge for the US juniors up until that last test where he finished off his average test times for the day. His E3 class score for the day was 10th overall.

The combined Day-one score for the four-rider US Junior Team, where the team's best three riders scores are tallied, is 5th place, 12 seconds behind fourth place Finland and 15 seconds behind France. Spain leads the junior division nearly 2 minutes to all competitors.

The injury sustained by Butttrick were severe enough that at the end of the day a decision was being made on whether or not to send Buttrick back to the US for medical attention.

The premier US Trophy Team faired better physically with all six of its riders finishing the day intact in fourth place, 1 minute and 19 seconds behind Finland.

Rain on the course during the second loop of the two-lap event cost US Trophy rider Kurt Caselli valuable time during one special test when he became stuck in a muddy rut.

The US Women's Cup team found themselves in fourth place as well with all three of their riders turning in respectable times 38 seconds behind Sweden who are in third.

The US three-rider club team of Wally Palmer, Fred Hoess and Andrew Delong were in fourth place followed one place back by fellow US club team of Nolan Irwin, Brian Sperle and Jordan Brandt who were in fifth.

All 34 US riders, including Buttrick, were able to finish the day with Don Williams offical start status in jeopardy as he was "rerouted" by local police during the second loop that caused him to miss a check and a special test. William's fate, of whether or not he could continue on and compete for a medal are currently being reviewed by the ISDE jury.

Just had a quick look at day 2 and my main interest is in the club teams where little tiny New Zealand team is in second with US teams in 4th and 5th. Hope the weather is kinder than 06 when you came here to ride.
