I was browsing around trying to learn more about "re-wilding" and came across this article by a rancher refuting an attack by a group called RangeNet (he does a pretty good job, btw) which is basically trying stop all grazing on public land. What struck me most was that he could just as easily be talking about the anti-ohv crowd at the last state UMP meeting I went to. All the same kinds of lies, half-truths, and out-of-context factoids. Here's a good section:

(16) Public lands grazing contributes very little to the American economy or food supply

This assertion better fits groups like RangeNet 2000. They contribute zero that is beneficial. They would rather hamstring certain segments of the economy through litigation, agitation and propaganda. They offer nothing constructive. They refuse to compromise. They are not willing to walk the land with others. They do not want to see success on the ground because it defeats their purpose. They have spent a majority of their time with asphalt, rather than rangeland, underfoot. They use scientific studies, pulling items out of context, then apply them to situations where they don’t fit. They then refer to the study as being unquestionably accurate. This has become “believable deception.”

Good one BRush! I couldn't agree more!

We have one of these wackos living up on Moscow Mountain. He wants that sucker closed off to all access, but then this last weekend I see a GIANT boulder blocking the road where a gate (that he held a key to) used to be. Now I get complaint calls here (I work for the County Highway District) from people who can't get to his digs on the mountain. Call the Waaaaaaambulance! Limiting access is great, according to this guy and his friends, until it inconveniences them!

Stuff it, you freaking wackos!

The group that was (in part) responsible for the infamous “Milk-Vetch” suit that led to the closure of much of Glamis, the SW Center for Biological Zealotry (sic), has been notorious in the Western ranching community for many years, and they certainly recognize the tactics: Misinformation and smear campaign followed by a spendy lawsuit funded largely by a loose group of wealthy attorneys and their pro-bono work (it rarely fails to deliver).

I met one of them once, actually, stinkin’ rich malpractice attorney from Abq. (yes, I can spell albuquerque), showed him a ranch he wanted to buy (can’t argue w/ that kind of environmentalism). I don’t know if he had anything to do with Glamis but he was working on a suit against the USFS over a grazing permit when I met him. I won’t bore you with the details but gawd was he an arrogant (and dangerously ignorant) ass, and I had to put up with him all day. Just imagine it...

Kinda makes ya wanna barf, huh? I almost did. But he couldn’t get any of that crap by me, I’ve heard it all before and have found plenty of holes in those theories and fallacies in those arguments. But they keep coming up with new ones, so you really have to pay attention...

Ranchers and Riders share many of the same enemies, there is no doubt about that. But please ride to the gate (and for God’s sake close it behind you) or drag your bike under the bottom wire, riders have bad reputations for cutting fences in some ranching circles. Mostly quad riders, probably... :D

Last year we had a meeting with the BLM officials here in S.W. Wyoming.

They came loaded for Bear, ready to close our user created trails (first created in the 1940's on game trails)
riding area down.

When they waltzed into the room and found it full of dirt bikers, quad riders, cattle ranchers and sheep herders they became agreeable real fast. :)

Great post BRush :)

Good post BRush.

Ranchers, loggers, miners, off roaders, campers, hunters, fishermen.........we are all in it together, against the extreme enviro's. What is most sickening is the fact that the extreme enviro's are NOT trying to protect the environment, they are simply trying to create a crisis so they can financially benefit from it.

What to do? Same old thing over & over & over & over. BRC, AMA, AWA, ALRA ...... join and support the organizations that are working for us. Write your letters, tell others, behave responsibly. Just DO IT!!

Just Remember

That they all have a vested interest in crisis! :think

The heads of these Environmental groups etc need the job security that comes from created crisis' :(

Heck, with a good endangered species case they can milk that for ten to twenty years in the courts, long enough to pay off their mortgage without having to work for a living! :(

If you check out a hard-core eco-extremist website, like the Center for Biological Diversity , they don't say so so flat out, but reading between the lines, you get the impression that the whole re-wilding process is well underway, and the primary vehicles are the ESA and the courts. The overall strategy is one of a death-by-a-thousand cuts: Establish as many species and sub-variants of species on the ESA as you can get away with and once that's done, go after a "critical habitat" designation for each one, then sue the BLM, USFS, or what have you so that it is imposed by the courts without benefit of public input process or a pesky economic impact analysis (there is a very cold "can't make an omlette without breaking a few eggs" tone to a lot of the discussions about displaced locals that I've seen in my brownsings) is so that you gobble up (i.e. "protect") one area at a time. Then, when you've so hemmed in adjacent landowners with regulations, that their ability to farm or ranch is severely curtailed, you buy them out at a song - or hamstring through red tape, their ability to use the land. Then just repeat the process. The goal is to build up to a critical mass of land where human activity is excluded.

***Forced To Be A Willing Seller?***

FAX THIS ARTICLE TO YOUR CONGRESSMAN.

Call (202) 225-3121 or the FREE number, (800) 648-3516. Ask for your
Congressman's office. Then ask for his or her fax number.

***WILLING SELLER - A MYTH***

"John Jones is a willing seller. He didn't want to sell and held out
as
long as he could. First the Park Service came in and purchased the
homes,
farms and timberlands of his neighbors who did want to sell. There
will
always be some. Then the agency began to search out those families who
were in some kind of financial distress such as from a death, divorce,
loss
of job and other reason.

"Jones watched as his community was checkerboarded by the Park Service.
He remembered being told when the park was created that he would not
be
forced out. But now the agency was targeting local businesses and the
county itself. Many small businesses were purchased and put out of
business. The Park Service purchased the holdings of several large
timberland companies. Smaller timber owners began to sell as they saw
that the logging infrastructure would eventually not be there. The
mill
ultimately had to close because it could not get enough wood. Like a
natural ecosystem, the economic ecosystem of a community is very
fragile.

"As more timberland was purchased, more homes and farms began to
disappear.
Many residents wanted to hold out but with fewer jobs in the county,
the
value of their homes and property began to go down. As the Park
Service
purchased them, they lay empty for months or even years because the
agency
said they did not have the funds to clear them out. They became havens
for
vandals and drug houses.

"The Nature Conservancy, Conservation Fund and other land trusts
circled
like buzzards. They bought from financially distressed landowners,
then
turned the land over to the Federal government. Time after time this
happened, quietly, secretly and silently they helped undercut the
community.

"As properties were taken off the tax rolls, the schools and county
services began to suffer. Several closed making longer trips to school
necessary for families. The school district didn't have the money for
the
busses they needed. Roads began to close. As large areas were
purchased
by the Park Service, the agency put up chains across the roads. Some
of
these roads had been used for years by neighbors as access points to
the
river or to go camping, swimming, woodcutting or berry picking.
Usually we
knew another way but over time, all the access was closed off.

"Churches, clubs and other community services began to close. The
Rotary
Club couldn't keep enough members. The library was in trouble. The
hours
were cut for it and other county services. There had been several
markets
in town and three gas stations. There is only one of each now and it
looks
like the store will close. That means a 80 mile drive to Millersville
for
groceries. Over time, other essential services and stores began to
disappear.

"When the park was created they promised tourism. I don't know where
it
is. We gave up a lot of good jobs for this park and the tourists don't
come. Several motels and restaurants were built in anticipation of the
visitors. All but one restaurant is closed, and it cut its hours back.
We
have two motels still open but they are struggling.

"We have a very nice ski area but a Park Service trail runs through it.
The agency has harassed the owners so often that they're close to
giving
up. They can't get any kind of commitment from the Park Service as to
a
final trail location so they can't invest in modernizing and expanding
the
ski area. There sure are a lot of people in town who would benefit if
the
ski area were allowed to meet its potential.

"We thought the Park Service supported recreation. Now it seems the
opposite is true. We heard from people out West that the Park Service
and
the environmental groups were becoming anti-recreation. It couldn't be
true we said. It looks like we were wrong. They seem to be against
skiing
and snowmobiling. Snowmobiles are being kicked out of all parks. It
doesn't make sense.

"The county had no choice but to raise our taxes. The tax base for the
county was shrinking almost daily. We had one local bank and several
bank
branches. Now there is only one branch open as part of the market, but
it
may go away too. The banks have not made loans in our town for several
years now because the future is unstable. They won't make loans to
loggers, equipment suppliers, or small businessmen because of threat
from
the Feds. No new houses have been built in some time. The theater
closed
and the cable television company is considering shutting down. It
feels
like a ghost town.

"Some of my neighbors are determined to stay and suffer the
consequences
and severe hardships of living within a now nearly all Federal enclave.
I
love my town. I was born and raised here, went away to college and
came
back. It looks like that even though I stood up to those Federal land
acquisition agents, there will soon be nothing left to stand up for. I
never thought I'd be a willing seller. But I am now."

Condemnation and Relocation Act).

The above article was written by Chuck Cushman, Executive Director of
the
American Land Rights Association, to illustrate how CARA will destroy
communities all over America. The article is a fictionalized account,
drawn from real examples many readers will recognize as taking place in
their towns.

Massive Federal acquisition of millions of acres of private land, then
converting it into government restricted use areas weakens local
economies,
destroys the social fabric of rural America and cuts off access for
millions of Americans to formerly assessable lands.

Print out and cut off the Willing Seller article. FAX it to your
Congressman.

REMINDER - House Resources Committee Hearing June 20th

All Out Action is Required.

You Must Get a Commitment From Your Congressman To Oppose CARA

CARA WILL HURT YOU!!

CARA is an all out attack on all landowners including farmers,
ranchers,
miners, forestry advocates, recreation enthusiasts, energy
explorationists
and many more. It will force the closure of hundreds of rural
communities
and force residents into the cities.

CARA also funds an assault on Federal land users. It funds more
Roadless
and Wilderness areas, and converts millions of acres of private land
into
government land which then is made off limits to you.

CARA will make millions of acres off limits to energy exploration and
development while taking $3 billion each and every year for 15 years
($45
billion in total) away from America's ability to solve its energy
problem.

CARA makes our energy problem worse while handicapping our ability to
fix
it.

Some in Congress call it the Conservation and Reinvestment Act.

Others call it the Condemnation and Relocation Act.

HERE'S WHAT YOU MUST DO IMMEDIATELY!

--1. CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN at the Capitol Switchboard at (202)
225-3121
to oppose CARA. There is a temporary FREE NUMBER of (800) 648-3516.
Ask
for your Congressman's fax number if you don't already have it. Urge
him
to hold FIELD HEARINGS in your state. Send a letter to your
Congressman
requested Field Hearings at:
Honorable ___________ US House of Representatives, Washington, DC
20515.

--3. FAX YOUR CONGRESSMAN THE "WILLING SELLER, A MYTH" ARTICLE.
Make sure you put your name and address at the bottom. Do not use
E-mail
to send the article. They will not likely see it before the June 20th
hearing.

--5. HERE IS THE NEW HOUSE RESOURCES COMMITTEE LIST. Make sure
you
fax them the WILLING SELLER, A MYTH article.

YOU MUST FIGHT CARA - HERE'S WHY:

-----CARA will provide over $45 billion dollars over 15 years in a
guaranteed trust fund, most of it for land acquisition. This is
virtually
the same bill you fought off last year.

-----The real name for CARA should be THE CONDEMNATION AND RELOCATION
ACT for that is what it really does.

-----CARA sets aside $3 billion per year that does not have to compete
in
Congress for funds in the appropriations process with medical care,
education, defense or any other social need. Why should land
acquisition
and condemnation of private land get a higher priority than the
military?
MAKE CARA COMPETE - NO TRUST FUND;

-----Government agents and appraisers get well OVER ONE BILLION DOLLARS
PER
YEAR TO CONDEMN PRIVATE PROPERTY. No one is safe. Eminent Domain
will be
rampant;

-----Environmental law firms receive grant money so they can sue YOU
into
bankruptcy;

-----Extremists gain $60 million dollars per year to train an ARMY of
investigators who will trespass on your land to LOCATE AND POLICE
ENDANG
ERED SPECIES;

-----ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS clamor for - you guessed it - money
money
money - to reintroduce wolves that kill livestock and run cattle
ranchers,
farmers, inholders and landowners off their land;

-----CARA would provide billions of dollars over fifteen years for
government agents to condemn private property and then turn it into
wilderness - no access, no people;

-----CARA funds SHUTTING DOWN RECREATIONAL AND COMMERCIAL ACCESS
to
the federal lands by making more lands available for more wilderness
designations like President Clinton has done;

-----"Non-government organizations" (NGOs) win funding to draw up
UNITED
NATIONS Biosphere Reserves, override national sovereignty and eliminate
private property rights;

-----CARA will fund new UN Biosphere Reserves and UN World Heritage
Sites;

-----Lands cut off by Forest Service Roadless Rule will become targets
for
CARA as well;

-----CARA helps make more LANDS OFF-LIMITS TO ENERGY EXPLORATION AND
DEVELOPMENT;

-----All lands with Endangered Species will be targets of land
acquisition
- there will be no limit;

-----Green groups will seek to designate hundreds of areas of private
land
as new Federal areas;

-----Much of the MONEY WILL GO TO THE NATURE CONSERVANCY,
CONSERVATION FUND and other giant green land trusts;

-----HUNTERS AND SPORTSMEN WILL LOSE ACCESS to acquired lands;

-----Inholder families are specifically targeted in the new bills;

-----Hundreds of small communities in existing Federal areas will be
wiped
off the map;

-----Land acquisition has always been used as a WEAPON TO REGULATE
AND
CONTROL PRIVATE LANDOWNERS;

-----LAND ACQUISITION DRIVES AWAY EMPLOYERS The community and its
future are left in doubt;

-----CARA (HR.701) will make it more difficult to build homes and
businesses in rural areas;

-----NO PRIVATE PROPERTY WILL BE SAFE with these funds available.
FARMERS WILL BE ESPECIALLY HARD HIT;

-----The Federal agencies should take care of what they have before
buying
more land;

-----Billions of dollars of private land will be TAKEN OFF THE TAX
ROLLS
forcing local taxes up;

-----Congressional Appropriations Committee estimates the FEDERAL
AGENCIES
ARE $12 BILLION BEHIND IN DEFERRED MAINTENANCE. Any money should go
for
maintenance, not land acquisition; and

-----There should be no net loss of private land in America.
