I guess gxdragon just about summed up the day for Friday in his report, except for the first section of single track, where i was leading the way, and the tree in front of me started moving....i thought it was someone comiong the wrong way, but then a bear came down out of the tree. i stopped and waved down the others, so they would not startle him more than I already did. I don't think they actually saw the bear, since when I turned back around after stopping them, the bear was gone. It was not a big bear, I would say about 125-150lbs, about half the size of the ones I am used to seeing here in NJ.

On Saturday, jmics, and Eugene both showed up each with a friend, unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to ride with them. NRB was also there Friday and Saturday with his wife.

Saturday turned into a search and recovery day for me. First thing in the morning, I offered to assist a family to help them find their ATV that broke a rear axel on Saturday. The reason I say we had to find it is because the kids were out riding Friday while their fathers were back at the truck.....a case of more people than toys, so they had to take turns.....Anyway, when the kids broke down, they moved the ATV off the trail and tried to find their way back, they finally got back, but could not say exactly where they broke down, so we knew the general area, and went out to search first thing Saturday morning. We found the quad on a trail named "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" and made repairs so we were able to tow it over all the rocks and out of the park.

Then it was time to break for lunch, and then head back out on the trails. I took a ride towards the river to cool off, and when I got there, there were a couple of bikes stopped on the other side of the river. I crossed the river, and found that one of them, a KLX400 I think, had dumped in the water, and sucked water into the cylinder. We pulled the plug and tryed to get out as much water as possible, but still no luck with getting the bike started, so we headed back to the parking lot to get a tow rope. When we got to the parking lot, NRB (Nathan) and his wife were there after a day of riding, and Nathan offered to go back and help with recovering the bike, so off we go back on the trails. When we got to the bottom of Turtle trail, there was a girl standing alongside a Gasgas by herself, so while the others went on, I stopped to see if she needed help. It turned out that her boyfriend fouled a plug in the Gasgas, so she stayed there, while he took her KX back to get another plug. We talked for a while, since it turned out she works at the dealer where I bought my KTM.

Unfortunately, while talking to her, I missed seeing just how helpful Nathan is......when he said that he would help, nobody expected him to actually show the downed rider what he did wrong by duplicating his fall in the river and drowning his bike. Now we had 2 bikes that wouldn't run, and only 1 tow rope. nathans bike was not under water long, so there was hope for getting it started. We took off his gas tank, and removed the plug, then flipped his bike over and worked the kick start to force out the water, still no luck. Fortunately, the group we were helping also had an ATV with them(they are good for some things), and he pulled the 2 bikes out of the rocky area and up to level ground, 1 at a time. once on level ground, he was able to pull the bikes to bump start them. Nathan went first, and his bike started pretty easily, and he took off down the trail to make sure everything ran OK. The KLX was a little harder to start, but it did get started, and we were back to the parking area to call it a day. Just remember, if you ever drown your bike in a water hole, and your not sure why you fell, If you ask Nathan, he may be nice enough to show you what you did wrong.

Sunday was uneventful, and I don't think there were any other DRN riders there.

It was an expensive day for myself, car running like crap I make it to paragon on a limp towing the bikes and it stalls out in the parking lot :ugg:
First trip out on the bikes feeling pretty good me and my buddy are just having some fun exploring when we came across a stream , up a rocky bank, turn to the left, sweeper to the right and a short rocky uphill maybe 30-40 degrees and about 30 ft tall with a t.v. sized rock for an over center lip at the top.<I think I just explained most of the trails in paragon  >

well seeing I wasn't going to clear the lip I figure I would try the ole' loop and launch technique for the bike to make it to the top. Picture if you can a "graceful" grab a handful of throttle slide off the back of the seat dismount that leaves me standing on the hill and the bike shooting skyward. I dont think I could of done it any smoother since I was standing on the hill like I was in line waiting for the bus. Well the bike is in nice form slight wheely to clear the ledge ..... but unfortunately not enough of front end lift. The front tire clips the ledge launching the bike almost straight up in the air and to my dismay slightly backwards.

In true "Six Million Dollar Man" slow motion special effects I am looking at the seat of bike <at perfect eye level> coming back at me. Quicker than a flicker my options presented themselves to me: run? ...... where? Dive outta the way? pinballing off the rocks below me and the bike following did not sound like a good idea at the time. Instinctively I just place my hands on the seat and push forward with all my might. Hey what do you know it worked!
Setting there with the jubilation of my bike not body slamming me into thinking of a different hobby,I hear the distinctive sounds of my bike landing.
Not your normal thud of your bike hitting dirt but the distinctive clank of something important hitting a rock. After a quick assesment of the pipe bieng smashed, with a mounting bolt sheared off and the rear fender held on by the wiring for my tallight , we head back to the truck for lunch, quickie repairs, and a break.
After cutting off the remainders of my fender at the car that won't run right something just snapped in me. I was at the point of no return it just didnt matter, I was out there to have fun and by gum I was going to twist that throttle till the cable screamed for help. and the smiles where ear to ear after that point.

Hey Scooter did you ever head back to that other gas station

Hey guys, I just found out about Paragon this weekend when I saw a brochure at a shop near me.

Me and my riding buddy were thinking about checking it out since all the places we frequent are illegal and dont offer many trails.

I dont have an off-road bike, is it OK to bring my KX125 there? My buddy has a TT-R. I know its often the case that MX bikes are looked down upon at trail areas, but I can't afford another bike.

thanks for the help...

motocross bikes are ok but things like rad guards hand guards and skidplates are almost mandatory insurance items.if you dont have them it can very easily cost you and your bike some damage.

here are some rules Scooter posted awhile back,

I know that trigger posted some simple rules for paragon, but thought I would post the park rules for those who have never been there before, and some who didn't read them last time .......pay close attention to rules 10, 11 & 16

And for the nancy's out there who are affraid of a little adventure, if you want a trail map, I suggest printing it from here http://paragonap.com/trailmaps.htm this map is color and easier to read than the black and white maps available at the park.

Also Turtle Trail (#7) has changed since last year. It is now one way, it is downhill only before 12:00 and uphill only after 12:00

1. All participants to the park must check in and check out. A driver’s license or credit card may be held to ensure proper check out procedures.

2. (SUVs and ATVs) All participants must display an orange safety flag. SUV’s must have the flag at least one foot above the highest point of the vehicle. ATV’s must have the flag at least one foot above the helmet while standing on the foot-pegs.

3. All SUV participants must wear the provided PAP wristband on their left wrist. All ATV’s and Motorbikes must have the provided PAP wristband displayed loosely around the handlebars.

4. (SUVs) Seatbelts must be worn at all times while driving on PAP grounds. Infants through children age three, must be properly restrained in an appropriate child safety seat.

5. No alcohol, illegal drugs, firearms, or weapons are allowed on PAP property. No person may be under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substances that may hinder thinking ability or reaction time. Coolers will be checked prior to entering the park.

6.(SUVs) All vehicles must be insured.

7. All SUV drivers must hold a valid drivers license.

8. All SUV’s must have at least one tow point (example: tow hook or receiver hitch). Front and rear tow points are mandatory for higher rated trails.

9. All SUV’s must have the following: proper roll-over protection, full size spare tire (or tire large enough to get you out of the park), battery tie down (no bungee cords), seatbelts, tow point(s), trash bag for liquid spills, tow strap (within their group), flag, wristband.

10. Speed limit for everyone is 15 mph in the parking areas and on all main and two-way roads. This is strictly enforced. All vehicles/machines must be in control at all times.

11. Parking lot is for parking. No tricks or horseplay. Please do not cause commotion or damage to other vehicles.

12. Please be courteous to oncoming traffic. Practicality dictates that the vehicle(s) that can pull over with the least amount of difficulty should do so.

13. Please respect proper trail etiquette.

14. Do not block a trail.

15. All participants must stay on designated trails and follow directional signs. All participants must remain with their designated group. Anyone found by alone will be in violation of this rule.

16. Travel only where motorized vehicles are permitted. Trailhead signs show the appropriate vehicle allowed on a trail. Do not blaze a trail.

17. Cross streams only at designated crossings. Avoid lake and swamp areas.

18. No disorderly conduct; No littering; No tobacco products may be deposited on PAP Property (Cigarette Butts, Cigars, Chewing Tobacco, etc…).

19. ATV/Motorbikes must follow all OEM recommendations (helmet, single rider, age, etc.). Helmets must be worn AT ALL TIMES when machine is in motion. No tear-off goggles permitted.

20. Age of a rider is determined by the manufacturers suggested age limit. Only exceptions are DCNR certificate holders.

21. Everyone must stay in Paragon Adventure ParkSM Property.

22. Everyone must stay on the appropriate level trails suited for your vehicle/machine requirements and driver ability.

Paragon Adventure ParkSM is not required nor should be expected to recover, repair or escort non-emergencies out of the park. Please have a way to get yourself out of the park if you are broken. Paragon staff, if able to do so, will do their best to offer assistance.

EVERYONE MUST RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF OTHER USERS SO THEY MIGHT ENJOY ACTIVITIES UNDISTURBED. DRIVE RESPONSIBLY TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT AND PRESERVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY YOUR VEHICLE/MACHINE ON THE LAND.

THESE RULES ARE TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY. Participants that disregard the rules of PAP, or pose a safety threat to themselves or others will, at a minimum, be ejected from the park without a refund and may be suspended from future visits to PAP.

b-b00gie,

MX bikes are fine for Paragon, but if you don't have the add ons that jmics mentione, your best bet is to stick with the green trails, and if a trail looks too rocky, don't try it or you risk damage to your bike. Also if you plan on riding any of the single track, make sure you have extra spark plugs with you since MX bikes have a tendency of fowling plugs in the slow woods sections.

What part of Jersey are you in, and what dealer did you find the brochure in? If you plan a trip to Paragon, let me know, and if I am going to be there, I will show you some of the better trails to head to that shouldn't give you any problems. Just don't ask NRB about what trails I consider the easy ones, he didn't seem to like "the Good the Bad and the Ugly"

Thanks, I'll definately check it out. Not sure when yet.

I live in Kearny which is between Newark and Jersey City. The places I ride are pretty horrible and the only decent places you get chased by police.

I've been to the Englishtown practice track which is OK, but very crowed and not too fun. I've never been to NJORVP, but I checked their website and a daily pass is now $70?!?!?!@$%!@%! I dont think it used to be that high... definately will NOT be going there. Havent checked out the ATCO track.

I wouldnt really be riding the rocky single-trails at Paragon. My idea of trail riding is nice wide open trails that I can cruise at high speeds. Just a lil bit of relaxation. :)

Oh yeah, I saw the Paragon flyer at ?Pompton Honda? I think thats what it was... its on Rt 23 just past Wayne?

Do you know of any KTM dealers in North Jersey? I have a friend who wants to start riding and is planning on a 125. I told him to pick his favorite color because all the new 125's are pretty equal (except maybe the dated Honda).... He picked orange...

WOOHOO 7/27, I will be there

b-b00gie,

yeah, that is pPmpton Honda, I left brochures at all the dealers along rt 23, and was just wondering wher eyou saw it. The closest KTM dealer to you would be East Hanover Honda/Yamaha(and now KTM) on Rt 10, or there is also Town and Country Cycle on Rt 23 in Hamburg(just north of Vernon), which is where I bought my KTM. You are right about the riding in NJ though, I do a lot of riding in Rockaway, but unfortunately, riding areas are getting slim. Paragon is also working on MX tracks if that interests you, the first track should be done soon, the land is cleared, and they have started working on the jumps.
