I notice the crankcase seal on the shift lever shaft of my 1980 KDX 175 was leaking oil. How does one go about removing it without having to split the cases and remove the shifter shaft?
Do you just dig it out and bend it up with a pair of needle-nose or is there a tried and true method?

Once off I'm assuming the new one simply slides on and you have to press it into place. I know Kawasaki says to use a special tool, but is there a better trick?

Mate, never tried it on an older bike, but I would presume there is no difference to a newer one. You don't have to split the cases. I just prise it out with a jewellers screwdriver. Another trick if it is really stuck is to drill a small hole in the body of the seal, screw in a long thin self-tapping screw, and then use pliers to grip the screw and pull the seal out.

Cheers,
Andrew
