A friend of mine is considering both of these, and I would like to give him some advice as to how they compare. His use would be strictly as a woods bike. The KLX is a 4 stroke and weighs 10 pounds more, but aside from that, I really don't know how they would stack up side by side in use in the woods. Can anyone offer any insights?

KDX all the way, it is lighter and the weight that the KLX has is higher. THe KLX may give him hot starting fits unless he can master the drill, I never could (XR 600)! The KDX 220 also has more stock power, more potential for more and it can be done inexpensively. The 220 is an awesome woods bike! And it costs less to boot!

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback and the comparison thread. Seems like it is unanimous, the KDX is the best. And I would guess that resale value is better as well.

Yes but not as good as a nice KX250 but better than a KLX. There's not to many people who want these bikes. Kaw isn't famous for dual sports or 4 stroke trail bikes. You can expect $2000 for a nice 1995 to 1998 and at least $2500 for a nice 1999 to new. In 2002 our 220 was $4000 new. I found a 1996 200 w/ FMF pipe and bark busters for $1500. What a bargain!

Yes the KDX is the BEST.:)
