Where are they from?

I want to button this thing up soon. But I fear I have a bad gear.

Are those chunks metal? Can't tell in picture. Maybe just carbon...

The chunks are of the same material as the gear. Might be that the pin was off center and scraped material off the side. Since I've never seen one before, I have no point of reference.

I ordered a new gear. It was only $7.50 or so. WTF, eh?
