I already did the shift star fix and want to know how many of u have actually broken an idleir gear. Do you just change it cause u dont want it to happen or did it actually brake. I will get one but i want to know if i need it now or if i should save it for a winter project. Thanks in Advance.

if it breaks, it has a high probability of doing expensive damage to your engine, like knocking a hole in the case, for example. if your bike is out of warranty, i would do the idler gear before i did any other thing. probably before i even rode it. i let mine go until the week before warranty ran out.

i have read about quite a few of the gears breaking on the planetklx mailing list. i would not chance it.

I personally have seen 3 KLX's that this happend on. The smallest repair bill was about $500. I changed the gear within 2 weeks of purchasing all 3 (97,99,2001) of my KLX's when they were new. Everything else is a "winter project". It is cheap insurance.
