I would like to know if anyone has put a 400 EXC on a scale with a full tank of gas? Also what is the horsepower rating, and easy hop ups. Why you ask? my Xr 400 is aging and the Wr 250 f doesnt have enough low end and has shall we say some nasty starting habits. The 520 is too much and I feel I could ride the 400 faster longer. So far I like the light weight, no linkage, UDS forks, E button etc.

Haven't had my 520 on the scale( same weight as the 400) but it sure FEELS lighter than the WR426....I'm sure it's a bit more than the WR250F but not much. Go sit on both, the KTM's carry there weight LOW and feel lighter. I owned a YZ400...I'd never go back. The E button is WONDERFUL. I kickstarted it a couple of times after I'd had the bike for two weeks and realized I HAD NOT USED IT:eek: The kickstarter is easier than my CR250 2 stroke. :)

My bike weighs 257 without gas. Exactly the same as my buddies WR400 with no gas. I have a steering damper, taller foam, lots of guards and an enduro computer on mine, though. I agree with Wild Hare about the WR's carrying the weight higher. Even lifting the two bikes on to a stand you'd swear the WR is 20 pounds heavier.

I don't know about HP numbers on the 400. I think it'd be a great move up from the XR400, though.

400SX -completely stock, empty tank, but all other fluids = 240. I would guess 12+ lbs extra for the kickstand, e-start feature, light, odo etc.

Set up for the trail, with MXC tank 1/2 full, heavy Rally Pro brush guards, skid plate, fender bag with spare tube, tire irons, headlight bag, rain suit, tire pump, lunch, gps, weighs 275. Still 15 lbs lighter than my DR350 similarly equipped. But why worry? Also have MSR enduro pak with tools, 88 oz water.

Get the 400 or 520, you'll love it. I have the 400 MXC, the only change I've made so far is a 13t counter shaft (much better) and skid plate. This bike feels lighter then my KX250. Last weekend my friends new XR650 didn't want to start after we stopped for some water, he kicked and kicked... I felt SO bad when I pushed the E-button and motored off.

Thanks for the info guys, just trying to have the best bike for what I want to do. My Xr's been great but, a few pounds less weight and about 9 HP more the KTM may find a home in my garage. The Wr 250 f with hand guards and skid plate with a full tank of gas is 275 lbs on a certified scale. It is top heavy and when stalled or very hot it is nasty to start. My foot still hurts from last weekend, what a pain. To be fair now, I have found if you rev it up and push the stop button till it quits it will start back up quite easy. The Xr just starts and has more low end and is easier to ride long distances. So why not have a KTM that has all of the stuff I like about both of these bikes? The 520 I rode had a light front end, so the 400 should be perfect.

Handl-it,

I had the chance to ride a 400e in the mountains at 9500 feet. Unless you are a big boy, the 400 has plenty of USABLE power, even at that altitude.

You asked about hop-ups - the best hop-up for the 400e is to trade it for a 520! Seriously, if you want more power, then pop for the 520. The numbers above tell the story.

The 400 is about as close as you can get to a 250e that burns straight gas instead of premix. The 520 is a rocket impersonating a motorcycle. OK, how about a really fast version of the 400e. I rode the 520 at sea level. It just flat RIPS.

Also having been the owner of a 400WR, I'd take the KTM over one of these any day for woods work. My main offroad bike is a '99 300E. It would take me 45 minutes to an hour to adapt to riding the WR. I can hop on a properly set up RFS and just go ride it like my 300.

My friend with the 400e says it benefits greatly by swapping the E muffler for an SX version. If you don't need the spark arrestor, this is an easy hop-up. Someone else here can probably suggest a USFS-approved aftermarket muffler for the bike.

Tex, I rode the 520 EXC so that why I said the front end was light. I loved the 520's power and wheelies were fun. But the basic plan here is riding closer to the max in control. Thats why Im looking at the 400, so less is more? Anyway you 520 guys have made me want another ride on the 520, I might not get off!

I just went to a new carb setup on my '02 400SX. I have a hard time believing such minor changes have such an impact. There is no way I could handle all the power a 520 can generate, based on the power I just found in my new 400. Of course, I had to get a 300 and off the 380, because I couldn't handle the 380 power either.:scream:
