My brother has a KX 250 1996 which was good for about 6 months when it started to loose a little power. He stripped it down over the winter to "do it up a little". When he put it back together with new rings, piston and reboard barrel it started burning out spark plugs. This led to lots of smoke. Know it just smokes alot. The carb is fine. He thinks it may have a warped cylinder head. The thottle cable is also good.

If it's big, billowy white smoke, then it's probably antifreeze leaking into the cylinder (it'll have a sweet smell to it too). He needs to pull the head off and check the head gasket to ensure it hasn't broken. If it's in good shape (probably should do it anyway), he can take the head itself and place it on a pane of glass and pour water/antifreeze/name your liquid (not beer, that's alcohol abuse of course!)into the spark plug hole and if it seeps out from under the head then it's warped.
