Hi
This is my first post so please bear with me.
I have a kx250 that looses power when engine hits band in third gear or higher. Also engine note changes to a much higher pitch without really increasing in revs. This problem has me and all local mechanics stumped :bang: and we are all hoping someone may have had this problem before.
Thanks for any help.

sounds a little like the clutch is slipping, have you tried going into top gear at low speed, slip the clutch on full revs, if it just revs and doesnt go forward the clutch is toast.

Clutch

I would say that your clutch is slipping also. First check to see that it is not adjusted out too much by using the adjusting screws at the clutch handle and also there is probably an intermediate adjuster somewhere along the length of the cable.

Make sure that you are using the recommended engine oil. Oils that have "additives" can make the clutch slip. If all checks out okay you probably need to change you clutch plates which is not that big of a deal. Parts cost about $100 and you can do it yourself if you are mildly mechanically inclined and have some tools.

I have checked adjustment on cable and replaced steel plates ,fibres and springs. I use silkolene oil. I thought that a clutch problem would show up more in 1st or 2nd gear.

After much hair pulling i discovered that the owner before me had put in the wrong detent spring on the gear select star. When the power was applied the star would rotate enough to partly dissengage the drive and when power taken of would slip back in. Thanks for the replies though
