i just picked up a 91 rm 250 that had low compression on the cheap, i already got the top end apart and piston off.
i got a couple questions: is it recommended to replace the wrist pin and bearing even if they look good? i inspected them pretty throughly with a magnifying glass and cant see any damage

anyways, if those are good i still need the piston, piston ring, wrist pin retaining cir-clips, gasket set, exhaust gaskets, exhaust valve control rod clip, air filter and maybe a replacement cylinder(im gonna mic the cylinder tonight and find out)

wheres a good place to order quality parts online? im a little new to dirt bikes and summit doesnt carry what i need, thanks for the help again guys!

If you don't want to buy a new wrist pin bearing, maybe there are some other things you wouldn't mind not buying. Do you really need a new piston and wrist pin? Usually, if you've got a low compression motor with no damage, it just needs rings. In that case, you need to buy a head gasket, cylinder base gasket, and rings. It should cost you around $50 to do.

the piston has a really thick layer of carbon on the top wrapping around parts of the sides, the piston looked dirtier then the 200k mile pistons that came out of my blazer, i really think it should be replaced, lemme try to get a pic

If it's dirty, CLEAN IT. Break one of the old rings and use it to clean out the old ring grooves. The crown can be cleaned with a soft wire brush and solvent.

Use a micrometer and verify that the parts are in specs. Your manual will give you service limits. I would suggest you replace piston, rings, wrist pin and wrist pin bearing just to be safe. Cut corners and it will cost you in the long run with a catostrophic failure.

Good luck, Steve.

Here are my favorite part sites, I'm sure others will have some to add;
