Need better handeling & supension and some more motor.

Think of the 300 as a 250 with more bottom. You don't have to work the motor as hard, and you'll clutch/shift it less.

The 200 will give you a lot more motor in a 125 size chassis. The 250/300 will give you even more in a lighter than your kdx package. It tight woods the 200 is the king of flick. More open stuff or xl size riders may want to go up a size or two.

I went from a tricked out KDX to a KTM. I test rode the 200's and 300's before deciding on the 300. Personally I thought the KTM 200 and KDX motors were Very similar But KTM obviously has the edge on components and such. The 300 is like a KDX, just a Lot more. A Lot more low end, and gobs more top end, if you ever get to it. I just lug around everywhere on the 300, always short shifting and Love it.

I still miss my KDX sometimes. Especially when something breaks. Parts are kinda pricey. But the breaks, clutch, suspension, etc all make up for it. If you're looking for more motor than the KDX had, I would definitely go with a 250, or even the 300. They're All great choices though..

Count me in as a KDX convert also. Went from a totally tricked out 98 KDX200 to an 01 EXC 250 and havent looked back. I agree with Bill I DO miss my KDX, you just cant beat the handling/turning of that little KDX. I also miss the look on people's faces when you blow by them on a nasty trail on that little KDX. As far as the KTM goes the 250 or 300 will give you MUCH better suspension, More low end, MUCH more top end, more vibration felt at the hands, and the satisfaction of knowing you are on the BEST woods bike made. :thumb:

NO REGRETS HERE!

I used to feel the same way when I would blow by someone on my old XR, but unfortunately I had to work twice as hard as I do on the KTM! No regrets here either!

I traded up to a 02 model KTM300exc 18months ago from my KDX220 (PC exhaust, 36mm carb, upside down forks etc) with no regrets. The 300exc is easier to ride, suspension is much better and the motor is awesome. The KTM is faster, uses less fuel and doesn't seem to need as much spannering.
Make the change and don't look back.

ALOT of KDX owners are moving to a KTM. ALOT are going to the RFS Theirs no waiting on a power valve to come up on a RFS......... just roll it on and go. IMO
I switched to a 450EXC, and ride better and faster on it. it may weigh more, but it dosen't feel like it.

I too switched from a 1996 KDX 200 (totally tricked w/KX front end). went to a 2003 250sx and took a couple rides to get used to the body position on the bike, but after that it is night and day from the KDX (motor, susp., handling). I am a believer!!

I must say the only thing I miss about the KDX is the WER steering stablizer I had on it. I could ride that bike forever without arm pump, not so on the KTM

After 3 yrs I sold my 520, 2 wks ago I got to test ride a 04 200 exc for the day, I weight about 210 and I have to say this little 200 took me everywhere I wanted to go, there was absolutely no place that I wasn't confident with the bike.

This thing was light, powerful (enough) and I could throw it around like a trials bike, it was nothing to loft the front end.

So thats what I have my eye open for right now, an 00-02 200exc ( gotta have that green sticker)

I give it :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

The 300 will have similiar power to the KDX. Very smooth just MORE of it. I owned a KDX, then a 250 GG then 300, now a 450 exc. I too miss the KDX but love the power of the big 4 stroke, don't count one out till you ride one. :)

One of my riding buddies (95kg) has traded his '02 520exc for a 300exc and says it surpases the 520 in every way except outright top end.
i still have my '02 FE400 'berg but have just bought a 200exc :yeehaw: . i am 65kg and dont need raw power, the 200exc is nimble through the trees and wont flog me out like the 'berg does.
don't underestimate the 200
