I've been suspicious of this since I heard about it. Remember Tim Brown talking about how Callahan was "trying to lose"? Methinks Callahan and the Nebraska athletic dept were in double secret communications, and Callahan figured the only way he could get out from under Al Davis' thumb was to be bad enough to get fired, thus making him free for Nebraska to hire, since, even though they may have the money, they probably don't have the draft picks to trade like Tampa Bay did for Chuckie.
