Anybody get the new Cycle News with the ride report in it? What did they have to say about it? Local dealer doesn't carry CN and I let my sub lapse a couple months ago. Thanks.

The Cycle News article is a "first ride" not a full test, they only got to ride the bike for one day. The loved the motor, they loved the suspension, went over all the changes from the CRF (frame changes, suspension changes, 18" rear wheel, new cam, more flywheel, new exhaust). They pretty much raved about the bike and said it was race ready off the dealership floor.

The bike is green-sticker legal for CA folks, but there will be a special CA-only model that has "an air pump mounted under the gas tank".

Cycle News CRF250X test

Some quotes from the Cycle News test -

"To say we were impressed with the X's performance would be a severe understatement. When the front wheel came off the ground the first time we opened the throttle, we were somewhat shocked - this bike has bottom-end, and pulls quite hard for a 250cc enduro bike."

"To top things off, the CRF250X is Green Sticker-able".

"Honda also had a California model on hand for us to ride. It's not much different from the 49 state model, except for an air pump mounted under the gas tank. The CA bike runs surprisingly well, but just doesn't quite have that snappy hit like the 49 state model has".

regarding the e-start -

"you must pull the clutch lever all the way in to the handlebar, but your fingers get in the way, preventing the starter from engaging, so you must release your grip on the handlebar, which gets a little annoying (are we getting spoiled or what?)."

This was just a small test, but it loooks like the California riders will have to do a few mods...... :scream:

Placelast:

The crf250x certainly has my attention. It comes down to the bike I want (crf250) vs the bike I need (the x model). The things I can do mentally, I can't do in reality, so the cream puff e-start enduro model looks best for me. I can barely handle the power of an xr50 this year, so it's best to wait until '05 (buying a new bike now would be like flushing money down the toilet :uh: )

I don't think I've seen a date mentioned anywere that was before Feb 9th. I have not been in my local shop and I was waiting until I heard they were there. I want to test one out! Maybe I can talk them into letting one of their parts guys that is in our riding club into letting our club have a demo :clue:

My riding buddy picked his up yesterday.

He said I could take it for a spin this weekend!

I told him I'd check out that l-o-n-g headpipe for durability!! ;)

That thing is just waiting to get whacked! Looks more like a rad-guard.

I took the crf250x out today for its first run. HOLLY COW wwhat a ride.My opinion is this, YOU GOTTA GET ONE OF THESE. After 25 miles it becomes a whole new machine, The power is smooth as silk. pleanty of power. Took the baffel out to see what the diff. would be, from mid range to high the power was very noticable but it had a bad dead spot on the bottom but that was with the whole end cap and all off, I think if you just take out the snout it would work better. The suspension is great with a few minor adjustments it rides better than the $700.00 upgrade I put on my KTM, corners on comand, climbs the mountains like a basturd bull elk looking for a mate, if you get in a rutt just flick the throttle and hold on and if it stalls , will just say if the wife had a button like that I would never leave the house, it's a dream come true.So there you have it that is my opinion on the new crf250x. The temp today was about 50 and the elevation is between 1200 and 3000 feet.

Hhhmmmm....'kdxeater'??

I would kinda' expect that from a bike that cost over $2000 more than the kdx.

Besides, a rider switch (me on a 250x and him on a kdx...or a trail90 for that matter) and it's the redwing that would take the thrashing.

I know my place!!

CC - Don't be askeered of the natural progression of technology, it won't hurt.

As strange as it seems some folks just think it's worth it to spend a little extra and buy a bike with technology that peaked sometime AFTER 1985. :moon:

Now shouldn't you be chairing a KDX annonymous meeting somewhere?

I seem to recall Malcolm Smith and Steve McQueen had a whale of a time on old technology bikes - On any Sunday .... :)

That new XR250F sure looks purdy - still not as purdy as my blue GG, but I like ... !!! (lots of dollars tho!)

I got mine 4 weeks ago, it is my 1st bike EVER. I love this thing to death, literatly. I ridden several other comparable bikes since and lets just say the envy in the other riders eyes has sold me on my choice of bike.

Be sure to check the oil every ride. Heck...maybe in the middle of a ride if it's a long one!

They things suck oil! My riding buddy's (well, he used to ride) went from full to off the stick in one ride.

I was paranoid about this when I first got my CRF. I don't have any trouble at all. I have actually rode four or five times since the last time I changed the oil and it doesn't seem to have used up much oil at all. I love this bike. They will have to pry it from my cold dead fingers to get it away!

So...in this type of bike there is:

1. One that is absolutely hammered after 60 hours
2. One that is so low on oil after 1.5 rides that you can't see it on the stick
3. One with 4-5 rides that hasn't used any oil to speak of

How much of this is relative to level of use and how much is difference in bikes?
