We've been riding atvs for years now. I just bought my son his first dirt bike so I jumping in here to try to get some tips and maybe hook up with some other people in our area.

Welcome to DRN. How old is your son, and what kind of bike did you get him? I have 2 girls (11 and 8) I want to get into the sport, but not sure what to look at for them.

My son is 7 and is very tall. We got him a pw80. He has been riding an atv since age 5. We spent a ton of money on gear and alot of time on teaching rights and wrongs. The pw80 was a perfect fit size wise but lacks a throttle restrictor. It has other ways to restrict the power but would not recommend for a beginner since you cannot limit the speed, only how fast you get to full speed. My son had to learn some new respect when he got on this bike and is still learning. I was unable to find a bike in this size range (crf70 etc...) that had a throttle restrictor on it. I have also been unable to find an aftermarket throttle with a restrictor screw in it to fit this bike.

So the bike has to much power for him?

His atv has more power but he had no problem grasping the concept of the thumb throttle. The twist throttle has him baffled since he's used to hanging on to the grip as a means of stability. I don't think its a matter of too much power, I think its more a matter of the finesse associated with the twist throttle that he lacks. Its easier to learn when you accidentally crack it wide open and a restrictor screw stops the throttle from twisting all the way open. Whats happening now is the bike lurches. We found that 2nd gear makes starting easier but gives a bunch more speed that he doesn't seem comfortable with yet.
