I am REALLY tired of the "popular" movies--they always seem so cliche, boring, shallow, etc etc.

Anybody have any recommendations for movies that actually have some thought put into them? And something that moves fast enough to keep my boyfriend's attention for a little while? (he's not really into bloody, plot-less action movies, but i couldn't get him to watch Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood either).

Some of the movies on my short A list are Road to Perdition, Adaptation and (don't laugh) 10 Things I Hate About You.

I just watched Open Range with K. Costner and R. Duval.

FWIW, I liked it! I'll give it :thumb: :thumb:

Not sure whether the neighbors cared much for it, since the big shootout went off around midnight!

The movie I thought I would hate but really liked was Just Married. My kids Loved Daddy Day Care and I agree it wsan't too bad. Pirates of the Carribean was really good too. As far as action flicks that are newer films I still really like Ocean's Eleven and 3000 Miles To Graceland (this one is pretty good shoot em up, but not going ot set the world on fire w/ its message) and lastly Van Wilder for just sophmoric humor.

Oh my God...Swade's got kids. :uh:

FC, I'm with you 100%. I'm not a movie snob (I occasionally like really moronic movies like Kung Pao: Enter the Fist, etc.), but I haven't gone to the theatre and really seen a good one for a while now. For 2 dollars a month, you can get IFC and Sundance on your cable and...if you're looking for deep or odd or in the least 'unique' movies, that's where you'll find 'em.

Neph's right. IFC has some good stuff.

I like to watch oldies. Hitchcock, Bogart, James Dean.... It was more about acting, plot and directing than special effects, requisite skin scenes, and violence.

My all time favorites are American Graffiti, Excalibur, Pulp Fiction, and anything from Monty Python.

If you haven't seen "Cold Mountain", it might be one to consider. A bit overblown, but worth seeing IMHO.

I just got around to watching "Heat" with Pacino and DeNiro.

If you are looking for action movies that ask you to think a bit (not many out there!), both of the above might do the trick.

If you want a movie that'll keep you glued to the couch, that's different, you won't have a clue how it ends, and you'll end up watching it 3-4 times just to get it all straight in your head. Watch "Basic"

Yeah I've got three little swade's...and you can tell by my movie choices we go total lowbrow lately (low expectations), but in my defense there just hasn't been much out in the past couple of years that I would call "thought provoking", unless "well that was nice" is the thought I'm after. It just seems the classics have remained classics for a reason, and the last well thought out flick was "Pulp Fiction"...I've given up on the hopes of a great story complete w/ an ending that doesn't seems like the movie went over budget or completely bankrupt of ideas. I did see Easy Rider again the other day...still a good flick.

"Basic" was one that I wanted to catch, thanks for reminding me Eddie

I just watched "Donnie Darko" this weekend. Good flick. A bit strange but very creative and a cool story. Hmmm, you would probably dig it but doubt this would be one that would keep your BF's attention though. But I'm all about story and less about action so I dunno.

If you wanna go to the movies, Cheaper by the Dozen was pretty good. Red, our friend Stacy, and I went and all of us really enjoyed it. It's cute and funny.

I haven't read through all of the posts so forgive me if I've repeated someone else's response... BIG FISH by Tim Burton is an outstanding film. The soul of the entire movie is just incredible. It focuses on family relationships... mainly the father and son/child relationship. The 'heart' in this film is not really what you would expect from Tim Burton. It does, however, have that quirkiness that we've (I've) come to love from Burton. You will be very pleasantly surprised, I think. Take tissues with you... you'll need them. :thumb:

I really want to go see Big Fish. I really liked The Last Samurai also. I thought it was a great movie (of course I'm a Tom Cruise fan.. Top Gun is my all time fav and Jerry Maguire is up there too). I'll agree with Swade.. my girlfriend wanted to watch Just Married and I thought it would be totally stupid. I ended up laughing like all the way through it.

Mystic River is very good, but not exactly a "feel good" movie. On video, check out The Good Girl...has Jennifer Aniston in kind of a different role.

I'd give Road to Perdition a :thumb: And would have no problem with Smit-Dogs list. As for anything current I haven't been to a theatre in I don't know how long so if It isn't on satellite or video I can't help you

For different stuff Sam Rockwell (nasty prisoner in Green Mile) has two IFC type films I like:
"Box of Moonlight" with John Tuturo
"Lawn Dogs"

For Pulp Fiction on a budget try "Boondock Saints". Ed Norton had one called "25" (?) pretty good. Everything above is real good as well, can't disagree.

Oh yeah and "Happy Texas" is a good comedy.

Definitely check out Sam Rockwell in Matchstick Men as well. I loved the movie and thought he was great. He's becoming one of my new favorites. dirtyd beat me to it with the Big Fish recommendation. It looks really weird if you only see the previews. But it's an outstanding movie. I thought it was one of the best movies I'd seen in a long time.

I'll try to pick ones that haven't already been mentioned..

Radio. One of the best I've seen in a long time, and I wasn't expecting much at all.
The Big Lebowski. One of my all time favorite comedies.
Death to Smoochy. Another good comedy, twisted. Robin Williams is great in this.
Identity. Very unpredictable, everything falls into place at the end.
Kingpin. Another of my all time favorite comedies, kinda goofy though.
Memento. Strange movie, good acting by Guy Pierce, definitely NOT run of the mill.

all I can think of at the moment, I know there's more..

I read the book "Get Shorty" on a flight to Hawaii a few years ago and only recently saw the movie. It was pretty dang enjoyable.
