One thing to remember is Pat's advice is mostly for race/high performance rebuilds, not new bikes where ther's more at stake than just ring seal. I've been to his his "shop", seen his work, and seen the results. He's a no-nonesense kinda guy while won't bull*hit you. I've asked him about his breakin and porting stuff when I was rebuilding my GPz. He told me to just go ahead and clean up the casting flash cuz smaller ports didn' t help on the KZ's he worked on.
What he doesn't mention is how much development time he puts into all his stuff. He practices what he preaches.
I used to work for a major small engine manufacturer dynoing engines, breakin was simple, 5 minute idle, 5 min high speed no load, 1/2 load for 1/2 hour, calibrate the dyno, stabilize oil temp(usually 15 minutes or so) and it's broken in.
