I just replaced the fork seals on one leg of a 1998 YZ400F. Put it all back together and noticed that the fork has very little damping; both rebound and compression. I had the other "untouched" fork there for comparison and obtained the same results. The damping can hardly be noticed even when the clickers are all the way in.

I used 10W fork oil and set the oil height at 5", the range is 3.1" to 5.9".

I think its been 3 to 4 years since this bike has had the seals and fork oil replaced. Is it possible that the damping valves have been worn out by the dirty oil and are no longer providing hydraulic resistance? Or is this bike just designed with minimal damping?

I suppose I could increase the weight of the oil. Is 10W standard for this bike?

Thanks for any input.
