OHV Bomb Warning?

This is from the discussion forums of the Pacific NW 4 Wheel Drive Association. (The counties mentioned are in Oregon but it could happen anywhere.) Don't know for certain that it is factual but, doesn't hurt to be aware of your surroundings.

This is IMPORTANT: Information from the BLM on a pipe bomb that was found at a gate. We have gotten more details. It was an 8-inch long, 2-inch diameter heavy-schedule PVC pipe. It was attached to a Swanson gate in Douglas County. When the bombsquad sprayed it with a water canon, it exploded. It had a mercury switch inside that detonated with movement.

In addition, a small, gunpowder-filled bomb with a fuse was found in Clackamas County. It was made out of PVC also, with two caps threaded onto a double-ended female connector.

If you see something that doesn't look right, leave it alone. Nothing more than terrorism being used to push a very radical agenda.

In this case, it was an OHV park for all off-road type vehicles, 4x4's and all.

Unfortunately, the way society is anymore, I don't think any activity is safe from whacko's that would plant such a device. Kids at parks can't even be left to play alone anymore.

I do not know if any of the info is indeed for real, I got it from an email of a friend who got it from someone that reads the 4x4 site but, it makes sense to be aware of things that look out of place. I checked several places for hoaxes and nothing came up and it was posted on the PNW4x4 forums.

XRPred, we've talked about packing for rides, if for nothing else than to scare away some of the larger critters we seem to run into much more often than we used to.

We've had encounters with bears several times - momma & cubs :eek: and a few times with moose, once a big bull and twice a momma & her calf.

I think I'll be taking a second look when out & about, especially when picking up trash at our riding areas.

Eastern Washington - Spokane area. Bear Spray sounds like a useful thing to carry. Where do you get it? Hunting supply places I assume. Is it like hare spray?

How does it work on cougars? We have yet to see one but we've found plenty of tracks. Makes a morning jog or mtb ride up the mountain a bit spooky, especially when the dog refuses to go with us!

Reminds me of a blonde joke:

A guy is driving down the highway and a rabbit jumps out in front of his car. The guy trys to swerve to miss the bunny & splat, hits him killing him dead.

The guy gets out and trys to save the bunny but it's dead. A blonde driving the other direction sees the guy parked on the side of the road, standing over the bunny in total grief so she stops on the other shoulder.

The man stared at the blonds in and in total disbelief he asked "What in the world is in that can?" I agree that the loonies are much more disturbing than most any critter but the critter's seem to be getting to be a bit more of a concern.

Just this week they've killed one brown bear and a moose here in town (I work in town). The bear was doing some early morning rummaging around a local neighborhood and they dropped him because it was getting close to the time for kids to start walking to the neighborhood school. Apparently the tranquilizer's didn't work on him.

The moose was killed this morning after getting tangled in a fence then charging a kid walking on the street.

Gee, you think the fact the American dream is to live in the country on a 10 acre parcel has anything to do with it? It's only going to get worse.
