oil regulator thingamagiger

ok well i have a 1980 Yamaha Enduro 175 (DT175G) and the bike needs the seal replaced on the oil regulator. i left to BC for a month and when i came back half of my full tank of oil was gone and oil was seeped ALL over the motor :bang: anywho so i pull the oil regulator cover off and oil goes everywhere so that was my problem... i undo the 2/3 screws holding the thing on and try to pull it out. Well it seems to be on a shaft of some sort :bang: and i dont know what it goes to cuz i got the shaft bout an inch out and got scared :ohmy: so i put it back in.. can someone maybe try and walk me threw what this is or give me a diagram or something plz...thx in advance :blah:
