A friend sent me this. I have NOT checked the numbers.

Every day, American drivers eat up nearly 7 billion miles of pavement — roughly the distance to Pluto and back — getting where they want to be. In the process, they consume enough oil to fill more than 150 supertankers

I looked up the current population of the US according to the Census Bureau- it is currently estimated to be 291,386,598. This averages out to be about 24 miles driven per person daily.

The average super tanker holds an about of 2,000,000 barrels of oil (a barrel of oil equals 42 gallons) . That means that the US consumes about 300,000,000,000 barrels of oil daily (12,600,000,000,000 gallons of oil daily).

Based on these numbers the average vehicle in the US gets about 5.5 MPG.

Wow .... Someone needs to tune up and service their car.

This reminds me of a bumper sticker ...

The meek may inherit the earth, but the strong will keep the mineral rights.

Where's Smit-dog?! Well, I can add a few things in here. One gallon of oil does not equal one gallon of gasoline. Another thing I read somewhere (so it must be true, right?) is that the majority of the oil the U.S. uses goes to other than gasoline, such as plastics (polypropylene, etc.).

OK, so this wasn't a Smit-dog-esque, myth-busting post, but hey! ;)
