I have a 96 200 w an original piston and rings. The bike runs good, however I've ridden a 95 w/a new piston and rings and I can deffinitely can tell a difference. The question is, do I need to do anything with the head or can I just replace the piston and rings and be done with it. Which piston should I get?

You don't need to do anything with the head, other than replace the head gasket. Wiseco makes good stuff but they are a little on the pricey side.
Pro-X makes pistons that will fit into the stock bore but are a very small amount bigger, and are less expensive than Wiseco units. I just found that information and the next time I do a top end it will be with a Pro-X.
