Paula, the 96 is the first? year of the perimeter frame model & is pretty much unchanged up to 2004 model (BNG's, heavier clutch springs, black tank/silver frame for 03 & not much else, if anything).
Check out the timeline on the KDX pages: http://justkdx.dirtrider.net/
If it's been well maintained & what you want, go for it.

Although the '96 looks more modern then the '91, out in the woods there isn't any difference. In fact, I prefer the engine in the ’91. I have a ’91 and there is a ’98 in my garage. My ’91 is modified and the ’98 is mostly stock with the exception of an FMF pipe and silencer. My ’91 is a much better bike. My advise would be to invest your money in the ’91.

If you are doing strictly woods/ endurance riding the 91 is a better bike. The perimeter frame is better for after market parts and making into a better motocrosser should you so desire to dabble in that.
It really depends on the condition of the 96. 96 was purple. 95 was the first year of perimeter to USA. My 96 was purple but the vin number states it was the seventh made in 97. I don't really know what year it is but I found the clutch springs weak too so maybe it was a 96.
