Wasn't it posted above that his bike landed on him? If so, there could have been enough of an impact with pressure applied in just the right (or wrong) place causing this type of injury.

ruptured aeortas are not uncommon when SEVERE BLOWS to the chest are taking, i know of a kid at my track who endoed his bike over the biggest jump on the track, tryed to ditch the bike in the air and run when he landed instead of tucking and rolling, when he hit he was smacked right into the ground and ruptured his aeorta... luckily he survived by the grace of god, but with severe impacts like the one jasons bike presumably deliverd to his chest a ruprured aeorta is a possibility, keep in mind that these are not common injuries and a SEVERE blow must be received in just the right way for this type of injury to occur... to put this in perspective the average human falling 4feet hits the ground with a force equivelant(sp?) to around 600lbs of force, now think about a 215lb bike flying much farther than that and you have some idea of the extreme force neccesary to rupture the aeorta.

very scary to think he was going that slow and even scarier about button saying he was only going 4mph, rather be dead than paralyzed.
