I pull my rear shock off the bike to take it to the dealer for checkout/service. I've had the bike 2 years. The service department guy told me if it's not leaking, or not working properly (I think he said it would be too stiff), only then does it need to be looked at/worked on. Is that correct? I know fork oil has to be changed, how about for shocks?

If it has never been serviced it should be done. The shock piston O ring may need to be replaced too.

If it has quality synthetic oil and you ride a couple of times a month every 6 months to a year should be good. If you pound hours of practice every week look in to upping the service interval accordingly.
