rear suspension help!!

I have a 95' 250xrL that has been stripped down to more of a xr look. Is there anyone that can help me set the rear shock adjustments? I have played with the knob on the cannister and liked the feel, but my brother-in-law starting turning the knob under the shock. :bang: To make a long story short I cant get it right.
I've been searching here and other forums but can't find anything on setting the clicker at the bottom of the shock. Any insight or links that might help???
