Im soon going to buy my first motocross. It would be a Suzuki RM, Kawasaki KX or Honda CR 80 or 125cc. Which is the best? :think

it depends on your height, weight, strength, and ability...do you have any experience riding dirt bikes, quads or 2 wheelers? also, what is the problem with yamaha yz's...

The 80s with the most updates and high tech stuff this year (2002) are the Suzuki and the Yamaha. Just bought a 2002 YZ85 for my son. All of the 125s are good, including Husqvarna and KTM with the KTM having the hottest engine. Of course Yamaha makes the YZ250f 4-stroke which races in the 125 class, and if you not tall enough for a 125 but too big for an 80, Kawasaki makes a KX100.

Conversion please! Going from a moped to an mx'er is a big jump. It makes a difference on how tall you are. You might be to tall for an 80, I'm trying to convert your height as we speak. I think you should go with the 125, sounds like you are around 5'10" or so, definately too big for an 80.

143 lbs is a good weight for a 125. i am just under 150 lbs and it moves me around pretty good. in the last dirt rider magazine they had a weight chart and i think 130-160 lbs was good for a 125, and anything bigger than that it was time to pick up a 250

What about a YZ125? They have been the king of the 125 class since 96. They fell of the top last year but after all the reports I have read about the 2002 they look poised to take the top spot again!! Go team BLUE!!

Okay, I don't typically respond to these posts, but give the kid a break.
He's trying to START. Yes, the KTM is absolutely THE best 125, with the ZOOK close behind. BUT, the KTM is too damn much for him, and you know it. NEVER having had ridden an 02 RM125 (eh hemm,...the most forgotten clarification on this board), a recent review (DirtBike??) says the power is not only awesome on top, but manageable on bottom, and the ZOOK has always had the smoothest power outlay. Of all the 125's, this might be the best one for you.

But as a starter, a 125 is a bit difficult for ANYONE. All the so-called powerbands on these things are pretty sharp and peaky.

I'd say if you want to start on a 2-stroke, just go with a KX100. They're still wicked fast, but probably more manageable than the harder-to-ride 80's like the CR or YZ. The RM would be close behind.

However, you might want to start on a small 4-stroke to get the handle on the balancing act, turning, etc. Something like an XR or TTR. :) It depends on how much riding you have done on others' bikes. If you've ridden friends' 80's or 125's, and feel "relatively" comfortable, ok.

Remember that smaller is not easier. In fact, I think the truth is closer to the opposite. I ride a KX500, which is a monster that can pull down cement bridges no problem, but when I get on an 80 or a 60, it's VERY hard to handle. James Smith likes the 125 better than the 80. Destry got his butt kicked once on a KX100. etc.

Best wishes, and ride hard.

the cost of the 125sx is very close to the price of the RM 125 in fact if you look around you maybe able to get a better deal. The KTM is bullet proof....buy the KTM!

Man ktm033, your as biased as I am about yamahas!! I have seriously considered looking into buying an SX125. Look sweet this year and come with more trick parts than you can count on 2 hands compared to the jap bikes.

KTM has a winner in the SX125.

The area around me is getting pretty orange. 3 of my riding buddies have made the switch already and another is close to it. They all have MXC models and I am a little undecided on whether or not I like the way the KTM's handle but I need to ride the SX model before I make any descions.

There were a couple of them at DW '01 but never got to now any of the guys riding them. I have yet to see anyone on them here in KC. If I get to ride one I will post what I think about them. If they are anything like the MXC I am sure they will be just as nice wth hopefully a little better handeling.
