i have a 1995 RM250 and it has had compression problems and would not start for the longest time now. posted many questions on this site but has failed.

ran fine. a little hard to start but after would run fine. never really idled. and would overheat a lot.

finally gave up and took off the head of the cylynder and the 2 gaskets were fine. listened closely to the piston moving up & down and sounded fine. looked at the cylinder was in perfect condition. (were replaced recently)

but still no compression. (can push it down with my finger)

no my oil is not "milky" so radiator fluid is not mixing with the oil.

this bike was a great bike and i just want it back.

(im no mechanic...please be specific and "sugar coat it" if you will)

thanks in advance

Just because the top end looks ok, doesn't mean it is.

Have you had the top end apart? Is the piston, cylinder and all that within specs??

You say it overheat alot.
Could bew jetted too lean causing the top end to go quicker(heat+lack of lubrication/cooling).
If there is no compression. i check the reed and then the piston with ring. Just like the guy above said.

As for dissasembly of the top end. Its not as hard as it seem, i suggest you get the manual if you do not have it.

Was it running great/good cmopression after it was rebuild last spring?

Who did the work on the motor?

"but still no compression. (can push it down with my finger)"
What were you pushing down with your fingers?

It looks good? Let me show you a picture of some swamp property I have for sale, real cheap! A feeler gauge can tell you how rebuilt it was. If some dolt ran that bike long on rebuilds, the bore can be oval, did he put an oval piston in it? The hard starting and what not COULD be jetting, but not low compression. You did have the spark plug in when you pushed the kick starter with your finger? Have you not seen any of 250girls' post and her rm? You are not alone. By your next post, I sure hope you have a manual and basic tools. Its winter, a very good time to get to know your engine. Or sell it to me, Vintage Bob@Ilikecheapclappedoutbikes.com (even rm's)

yeah i had a spark plug in it when i pushed it down.

i dont want to get to know the bike over the winter i need to sell it before winter.

i didn't even know there was a thing known as an oval piston.
and i'm not getting a "feeler" gauge.

i just need a simple answer on what the problem could be.

Sounds like the cylinder needs to be pulled and checked for wear. If you got the head off, might as well pull the cylinder, then remove the wrist pin and take the piston and cylinder to a machine shop to have it checked. You may need to have the cylinder bored, new piston, new rings.

When it started to have problems with over heating, you should had a shop look at it because you may have caused the motor to die an early death.

Sounds like you don't want to work on it. If you really don't know what you're doing, you'll need to take it to a shop. If you don't have the money for someone else to fix it and you need to sell it soon, looks like you'll be selling it as not running.

Simple answer, find another hobby. Unless you intend on selling it as is, cheap? 300 to 600 dollars in parts and machining, you doing most of the labor. At the bike shop, thousands. Vintage Bob

Thanks for being seemingly honest, what the heck, I do not even see that often. Pa, I may be able to ship it here for around 200 dollars,,,, put a price up in the proper forum, I will be on it like white on rice if the price is right! Vintage Bob

No, I mean I have a shipper I trust, unreal cheap shipping charges, husband and wife team, highly reputable. 1 bike and 1 box of crap, straps the bike down and delivers it to my door. Vintage Bob

Oh I hear you. But, a 15 year old dirt bike, its going to cost me 900 or so, sight unseen. If the engine is in this condition, when was the suspension checked last? And its an RM. Still thinking. Vintage Bob
