ah..yeh,NO! ok class, what is the difference between fixed wing and rotory wing aircraft? no one? well, it goes something like this, a rotory winged aircraft will loose lift with any loss of power, while a fixed winged aircraft will not. i remember when they were just fielding the black hawks to us at ft bragg, those things were crashing all the time (ofcourse not, but one is too much) i think it had something to do with the tail sec, the flapp would completely lower at speed.:eek: this would "tail up/nose down" the ac, at appox 100mph tree top level, those crash sites were grim.:mad: nope, no sir....no personal helecrasher for me.

I think the safest aircraft without power, besides a glider, is probably a gyrocopter - check out this new gyro, it unloads the rotor when in flight, has a small wing, and has a designated top speed of 400mph plus. It is in the testing phase, and so far has topped 156mph, supposedly this will be some kind of record breaking machine.

Forget the skycar, this cartercopter has way more potential, and it has VTOL capabilities, and can fly/land without power !

I have been following the development of the cartercopter these past four years, it had yet to take off, and was in prototype stage, now it is flying, and already setting records.

Now, now, the Osprey is built in Amarillo, we need that baby to fly !! :think

sfc crash, the gyrocopter is unlike a helicopter or aeroplane, the Osprey has a dead zone, which means when in transition from hover to forward or forward to hover, if there is a system failure, the Osprey will fall from the sky, the gyro has no dead zone, which means, short of the rotor disintegrating, the thing will fly with no power, the rotor is always in autorotation, and forward thrust is via the pusher prop. Check out the web site, explains all that cool stuff.

A helicopter can survive an engine failure, but you get one heck of a hard landing, the gyro can glide to a landing, hover, land, and even take off again, and land somewhere else, all while the rotor is in auto rotation and no power.

The Osprey relies on computers and hydraulics to transition from helicopter to aeroplane, pretty hairy stuff. I hope they get it sorted out. Methinks the Osprey needs another engine, a fixed pusher, or front engined puller. But, heck what do I know :eek:

hey bundu, i know a helo can survive total engine failure but it's gonna be one hard landing...but like i've always said...nobody ever died because they fell out of an airplane, it was just sudden deceleration trama.;)

mmmmm....the ch 47 chinook, those things rock me to sleep.harriers are good 'cause i don't think they've got that dead spot like an osprey. favorite rides.....c-141 c-5, ch 47...least fav, c-7(too cramped) c-130(cramped-noisey) uh 1/all (scarey) uh 60 (scarey) puma (where do ya sit?) fav jumper......c-141, smooth..sa-weet.;)

:think , ican't figure if you're busting my balls or not....cause that's what i'd say to some poge, something like" wow, gee whiz, you got to ride in a helecopter for 5 min, wow" but i'm a supreme wise @$#.:p but if you're serious,yes those to me were like you taking the bus, it was how i used to get to work.

Whoa....

Dude, I am in NO WAY busting your oo's. I have only been in 2 helicopters, (countless planes, small and large), and they were the most awesome flying machines IMO. These other hybrids are fascinating to me! I just cant wait for them to become the norm for private owners. :aj:

oh well wayneo, you shoulda been bustin me ;) i look back at my response and i wanna say"wow, gee whiz, were you some type of ranger rambo green berret navy seal commando or something" but once again, me..=supreme wise @#$:p btw, everyone i knew,in the senior ranks,that had been doing this stuf for years(like me) real honest to god, brave the bullets kinda guys,.....we all hated flying..in anything..scared us, jumping,scared us, repelling out ac,scared us. doing airmobile,scared us.over the years we'd seen alot go bad quick,the more ya know,the more ya know that can go wrong, plus you've been involved in your share of bad stuff and probably dodged the bullet a couple of times. so that's where i'm comming from. if you ever saw me tho, you'd think me,and my buddies, calm and cool. but hey, it's ok to be scared, just do the mission. btw, mx...scares me, that's why i wanna race this year:think i think i see a very disturbing pattern here.

It is a pity you guys are so far away, they are busy running those fly tests on the CarterCopter in Olney TX, not far from Wichita Falls, got two Air Force pilots doing the testing.

Spend some time on that cartercopter site, it is fascinating stuff.

But if you want your oo's broke, I can do that pretty good. Well, maybe not as good as your Sarge. :moon: But I can try.....

Hey Bundu, maybe you can get out there and shoot some "spy" video of those things. Id love to see them in flight-they dont have any movies on the web.
