Sand & Air Filters

So, whats the correct way to wash an air filter after its got sand all over it? After a couple recent dune rides I cleaned my filter, but washing it seemed to drive the sand into the filter. I tried using compressed air to get it out, which helped some, but I can still see a few grains in the foam. So I said screw it and put in another filter I have that hasn't been used in the dunes.

I'm pretty sure that even after oiling it, the "sandy" fitler is no where near safe to use. Would it be better to use compressed air to blow the sand off before I clean the filter?

Any help is appreciated. :)

Not that this will help with your sand removal question, but did you use a filter skin on your airfilter to help prevent getting sand on it?

Nope. Not sure if anybody makes a filter skin for the 650's weird filter.

That's what nylons are for! :) And in my opinion the only thing they are good for! ;)
Next time, cut the end (foot part) off a pair of stockings (nylons) and stretch it over your air filter. :)

all we have here is sand. dry powdery sand, sometimes wet sand if we're lucky. I wash my filter in paint thinner (mineral spirits) in a 2 1/2 gal bucket then in hot soapy water. you can certainly tell when all the sand is out by whats in the bottom of the wash tub (sink in my garage). Never had a problem, never used a filter skin.

:think Hmmmmmm, I'm thinkin' there wouldn't be any (or as much) sand TO wash out if you used a filter skin...... but maybe that's just me. ;)

One of my local tracks is a powdery sand the best way to get it out is to let it sit in whatever you use to get the oil off then, when you go to rise rise inside out and repeat then a little amount od compressed air not to much or you could put holes in your filter hope this helps.

My dad's bosses husband used to race motocross and he said in dusty conditions to put greese on the inside of your air box.

Yea, but GSR, filter skins cost money. I'd rather just wash mine after every race than spend money for a skin. We get sand/dust on our filters a lot (lots of dusty races). Just wash in paint thinner (kerosene, something like that) then go to a soapy bucket, we use laundry detergent for ours, then rinse in water. Make sure you get all the kerosene out in the soapy stage and all the soap out in water stage. This seems to work really well. My dad has been doing it this way for almost 20 years and we haven't had any problems yet.
