as the time grows near and I reflect back... I just wanted to say thank you to Okie for your vision of putting this thing together and to the DRN family for making it happen. When I came the Spodefest in '00 I barely knew how to ride a bike and knew nothing of working on one. (Yes, I know, I haven't improved in either category). Upon first sign of trouble (blown fork seal) I have to come out of my shell to ask if anyone had a spare that would work. Everyone I asked either looked or pointed me to somebody they though might have one. Turns out I had to go to the nearest Kawi dealer for the parts. When I get back the MX school is starting. As bad as I wanted to go I put No_Mo on my bike and started asking if anyone could show me how to replace a fork seal. MX221 and his buddy Matt had the Plano Honda van and both jump in on the rescue. Turns out I had to pilfer (read borrow) some T-handles so I go up to this guy next door who has a trailer and ask if I could borrow some T-handles. He tells me to look inside this trailer and grab the whole set. Turns out it was Ivan who was offering Gomer's tools to me :) . Anyway, Matt and Shane finish off the fork seal for me and did it so fast I didn't even have time to see how they did it but we are back in the ridin' business. As the days go by too fast Okie's mom adopts No_Mo and we make a lot of buddies, including Texans Taraker (mooch) and Patman (the cool one). Thump and Twin were MIA. Even met some great Yankees like Jeff Allen! Too soon we had to load up and head south with the promise of seeing everyone next year. When DW '01 rolls around Thump pulls a holeshot on everyone and he and the CA bunch are already setup. There's this one cat from Asterisk who I thought was going to be there as a sponsor and hawking a product. Turns out this guy is blasting around the GP track at speeds I couldn't believe. I was almost offended (read embarrassed) to hop on my spodely mount and fire it up. At least I did wait until Billy got off the track. :) Made it a point this time to meet everyone in the slums and surrounding areas I could. It definitely cuts into your riding time but it's time well spent. These kind of friends last a lifetime . Missed the group that became the Heartland Spodes but I will make sure I get to meet all them and everyone else I can this year. point I'm trying to make is don't spend all your time riding, you will be missing one if not the biggest part of DW. The family gets bigger every year so it's always a challenge but don't be shy! Things that stand out in my mind from the inaugural Spodefest: 1) trying to unload quietly in the rain at 2:45 AM 2) Taraker firing up a quad for a 5:40 potty break 3) trains - lots of 'em 4) Okie and the mods are actually human 5) lowsiding on the C-MX race and coming in last. Would have probably had the same result even if I hadn't crashed. 6) Wrench's flappin' fender 7) Pokie running 30 minute motos on the GP track Things that stand out in my mind from DW '01 1) Gomer in a pink tutu on Patman's Montessa 2) getting to use JB Weld by the handful 3) meeing many new slumlords and swapping stories 4) Watching Buster trash Thump's YZ400 5) wondering if Okie was going to banish me forever 6) receiving the coveted spode award :aj: 7) standing proudly every morning during the Star Spangled Banner! 8) not coming in last in my heat for the MX. 9) wondering how Okie is going to top this in '02 Looks like he has done it. Sorry for the long ramble, but bottom line - I feel sorry for anyone NOT coming this year. For those who do, make it a point to introduce yourself to everyone you meet!
