sorry to say, it might need jetting. If your running 40:1 ratio and it smokes like a chimny then its a tall tale sign wither your silencer needs repacking or your jetting/float level is off.

Could be the type of oil you run
Could be you don't ride it hard enough to clean it out
Could be jetting
Could be leaking coolant into the combustion chamber

Has it always smoked heavily?
What does the spark plug look like?
Getting a lot of spooge out the end of the silencer?

run a little bit leaner fuel/oil mixture and see if it helps.

If you do that with bad jetting it will make it worse, and he could have the chance of running lean.

Dont lean out your fuel mixture to "test" something out. you should investigate the problem not just try things out.

32:1 ratio should do it.
Unleaded fuel, 90+ octane rating.
Any type of dirt bike racing oil premix (two-stroke)
The carb wouldn't have much to do with smoking.. Only a little perhaps.

What color is the smoke? Are you loosing (having to add) coolant or gearbox oil more than normal?

try running Maxima SuperM, itll help clear up the smoke, and it might need to be re-jetted depending on what color the smoke is.
