Starting problem

Hey guys, i'm kinda new around here and new to the motorized world of 2-strokes. Anyways, I have a 92 RM 125 that I have issues starting.

At first I thought it was the piston needed replacing because it had low compression. So I replaced that. After I replaced it, it started right up. Great!

Well then I started noticing it was getting harder to start again. Sometimes I'd even have to push start it. Didn't think to much of it.. cause it was getting to the end of the season.

So I got the bike out and tried startin it after it's been sitting, changed the plug, and tried kickin it over, wouldn't start. So I drained the fuel and just kicked it over and wolla it started! So I put the fuel back in and road it around a little more and it was running great! Pulled it out again this morning to start it up, and nope.. pain in the butt to start! Push started it 3 times before it actually was up and running.

I'm sure there could be a million things... but I figured I have to start somewhere.

Check the float valve tip, the rubber covering the tip and forming the seal can become compressed causing it to flood if the gas is left on when not running.

When you try after a while hold the throttle wide open, it sounds like a very rich condition, i agree with kmccune on the float issue too much motion lotion.

I realize forum is old but thought I could ad to it. I had similar problems on my RM 250. I did compression test, cleaned carb, new plug, and cleaned air filter. Nothing helped! I then repacked the silencer and put and thin strip of Teflon tape on the spark plug threads. Now, starts on one or two kicks and has not fouled a plug since! Don't know which helped because I did both in between starts, but it works now.

Might want to pull the reed cage and have a look at the condition of the reeds. Weak reeds will cause hard starting as well.
