Why is it that the world championship enduro or motocross riders don't use steering dampers? Are there any negative effects or is it just that the factory teams don't want to endorse other accessories. You see a lot of them on US gncc bikes but not many in Europe

Maybe because they are good! :)

I am having a tuff time deciding on getting one or not. I hear good things, but I am a retro-grouch that does not like gimmicks.

think of a steering dampner as the best insurance you can possibly access in the middle of the woods or even the wide open desert.
I m sold on them and wouldnt want to get in the groove without it
you can really push your bike to the edge better if you have full control of the machine and the stabilizer helps you keep that control... its as important to me as a helmet and boots. youll see
outstanding investment they are gold a reason and its a reason you will grow to love.
