Take out the air filter screen on '01 KTM M/XC 400

There is a screen attached to the basket on my air filter holder. I was thinking that might be restricting some of the power. Does anybody know if there is a purpose for this little screen or has anybody else taken theirs off for more power?

i read something about it in one of the magazines
dont remember which one
i read something about it to stop sparks from getting back to the filter and causing a fire and it made zero difference between having it in or removed
as long as it is kept clean
i wish i could remember completly i really did not read it fully except i do remember it had not effect on performance when kept clean

NH KTM #313: Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. This is my very first KTM and I know so little about it. I guess I will keep the screen clean and leave it in.

Thanks so much for your help!

That's odd. My 01 400 EXC did not come with any kind of screen for the air filter basket. What about you other RFS owners? Is this an MXC thing?

My 2001 520sx doesn't have one either.

For what it's worth, I did have one on my yz400f and at that time there was no power difference in leaving it in.

I heard that ktm was designing a new basket. I would imagine thats the one.

Well this is odd then, because my '01 KTM M/XC400 definitely has a screen so maybe it is just an M/XC thing.

Its an anti-backfire screen for filter fire prevention. I have seen this happen. Every Jap four stroke I've had had one. Leave it in, it won't hurt a thing. I imagine it was a goof that some of the KTM strokers don't have one.

ALL four strokes have a new air filter and new filter carrier since January 2001.
The new filter has 3 holes at the back. The old one has only 1 hole.
The filter carrier is also modified.
See in your spare parts manual page 16 : version 1 is the old version
version 2 is the new version
I guess a lot of 2001 US RFS are shipped in 2000. If so, you will have the old version.
So be careful when buying a new air filter for a 2001 model. Buy the right one !

Do not remove the screen in your new filter carrier. It is for fire prevention (back firing) and removing will not give you extra power.

If you find spelling mistakes, keep them

Jo-EXC is exactly right. All RFS made in January 01 have this updated filter and cage. They also have a fork internals update and any bike supposedly with the version 2 air filter should have the fork update also. I believe there is a part number for the update but I have not been able to get the number yet.I am going to call KTM tomorrow and see what I can find out

I don't have a 4 stroke but recommend that those of you without this screen get one. I read in another post that a guys YZ250F caught fire in the airbox because his didn't come with it from the factory.
