Testing Octane?

Is there anyone who can tell me how I can test octane without going to a high dollar Lab?

I believe you can only test for specific gravity on a low budget.

I was told the pricey test is but an antiquated method that adds up to a modern joke. From Dr. Dave @ precision auto research. Its not about octane rating. Pure fuel can run at a lower octane rating, where as some perfumed brand x race fuel has to go to extreme octane numbers to match. I am sure I have it worded differently, but the basics are correct!
