this one angered me...

I picked up an 82 yz125. I put gaskets, reeds, orings piston and ring into it. ****ed with the little poor excuse of a carburetor so it wouldnt leak out of every overflow (couldnt get float level near to what it needs to be) and finally got it started. It ran well surprisingly. I warmed it up, pulled the clutch in put it in 1st and it felt like that barely warmed up "slip", the revs go down a little, it takes off a bit and then stops and revs back up. I let the clutch out slowly and nothing happened :coocoo: I looked down at the motor and gas was pouring (this isnt the surprising part) and oil was running out of the end of the transmission at the sprocket which just had a seal installed recently :think: If i remember correctly I had the clutch in again and it felt like it went into neutral. So I tried the process again, clutch in, down to first and it stalled. hasnt started since, fresh gas, getting gas, getting spark What the heck????

It could possibly have a broken idler gear, but it almost sounds like the shift forks could be bent or something along those lines.

the float needle is worn and possibly its seat is worn also. If this doesn't cure your stalling problem and the fouled plug that is likely the result of raw fuel running into the engine then ensure the clutch is assembled properly then check for air leaks.

Thanks for the input, my issue with the carburetor is not as high up on the list as the whole 1st gear not taking off thing. Im almost positive it isnt the clutch. does a "shattered gear" come to mind when you hear it shifted into 1st with a bang and quickly vortexed its way to neutral? Sorry I just have no other way to describe it..

Thats why i thought idler gear.*On the KLX300R it dose this when you have a have load on it because of the weak designee.

ok, got the carb straightened out. I put it up on a block, took the chain off and found that it has no neutral. I can see the cog spinning fast and faster as your put it through the gears but the clutch has no effect. What next?

if the clutch has no afftect than you may have knotches in the clutch basket that are kepping the clutch discs from separating. take off the clutch cover and have a look at the clutch basket.

If you have ridges, you can file them down flat but you can only really do this once.

have you had the clutch basket off yet? if not try taking that off, clean the plates and put it all back together ,, the plates could be stuck together,, i had a problem similar to that, hope this helps

you know this does make sense now that I think about it. I did have the clutch basket "off" to check the crank seals because the previous owner said he had them put in. I also remember trying to take the plates off and they wouldnt come off freely, so I didn't bother thinking it wouldnt hurt. Yes this helps a lot, I'm halfway tearing into the case again and will check it as soon as I can find a warm place to work on it. Thanks a lot guys!!!

argh.... I pulled the sides off again and went through the clutch, everythings fine with that and its doing the same thing... I guess I'll have to bring the engine into school and split it in half. That is the correct way to get into the tranny right?

My recent fun of splitting the case... sounds similar to your problem, Im going to guess bent shift fork(s), worn shift drum, or seized gear if you cant find neutral anymore. Read my thread.. lots o pics as well
