I just rode the WFO mud and snow ride and hit the ground more times than I have in a year. Usually, I am a pretty good mud rider since I rode in Hawaii for 10 years and learned a lot on the "Hawaiian Ice". I was using a Dunlop 742 front and 756 rear on my CRF450 ( the stock tire spec). They had one ride on them, the previous week's Cowbell enduro. I am questioning whether it was the 742 front tire that was causing me so much trouble or just the conditions. I got very tenuous going around corners that were sloppy and had no berm to put the tire up against. Should I have used a more mud friendly tire such as the 773, Brigestone 201, S12, etc.? Or, was it because the 742 was a little worn? Or???

Trelleborg makes some excellent tires but a bit pricey.

Best pure mud tire I ever used was the Yokohama super diggers back in the 80's...........wish they still made them.........Nowadays IMHO the Michelin S12's are the best combonation of life and traction on anything from hard to soft......I run the 130/70/19 on my 250F and love it! Nothing could tear up the northeast ohio clay like the superdigger though!!!!

Trelleborg make some of the cheapest tyres here but are not well thought of. Bridgestone were the best we ever used (M25/26?) good in sand too.

If you ride off road try a 756 front, the 742 is better for most MX tracks. The 756 is not an all out mud tire, but works very good for a wide range and works great for soft or slightly muddy ground. The edges wear fast, but it still works good. Other option is Michelin S12.

I have run the S-12 rear(140) with Dunlop 756 front - swear by 'em. Regarding width, narrower for mud and wider for dry/sand. Currently running the 756 rear, not bad, still prefer s-12 mich.

Duane - I ran the 140 even on my GG 300, very tractable in most areas.

I ran a 756 last spring, way too slippery for me in the muck (good granite tire though). I switched to a VE33 a couple months ago, it hooks up well. Went riding yesterday in the mud and I went places the 756 would not take me (but maybe I'm just getting better).

I still wanna try the M5B though. Now that's a mud tire

756 is a good front tire (IMO and all that).

The Michelin S-12 or Dunlop 752 are my favorite rear tires up here in the rainy, muddy Pacific Northwest,. Either works well with the Dunlop 756 front tire. Don't forget to drop your back tire pressure down to about 8 to 10 psi in the greasy stuff. The bigger patch of rubber you can put on the ground the better. If you try to run 14 psi in the mud you're going to be chasing the rear end all over the place.
