To Hone or Not to Hone

Doing the top-end on my son's 04 YZ85. The cylinder looks good; cross-hatching still in tact with no visible score marks. The only area that has worn the cross-hatching off is the skinny area between the two exaust ports. Do I need to hone the cyclinder or can I take the sheen off with 600 grit wet sand paper? Should I leave it alone and hone it the next time? Please help.

Yeah, don't hone it or you will take the plating right off. That's what I hear anyways.
