A message from Tony Foale :

I am writing this message to all of you who have bought the Motorcycle Chassis book, because we have this new product which may be of interest to you.

This software allows the user to enter the physical dimensions of almost all types of currently used suspension systems and it calculates all the parameters of interest in a kinematic analysis. That is wheel movement, spring movement, motion ratio, wheel spring rate, wheel and spring forces, structural forces and stored energy. This is both an educational tool (learn how suspension systems really work) and a practical tool to help constructors and suspension tuners get the best out of their machines.

The best way to see what it does is to down-load the user's manual from http://www.tonyfoale.com/suskin/userman.pdf

The whole package comes on a CDROM which contains the software, user's manual, tutorial videos and a book on suspension kinematics in PDF format.

Indispensable for :
Designing or modifying a motorcycle.
Setting up sport or racing motorcycles.
Achieving improved comfort and handling.
Students.
Anyone wanting to better understand the workings of suspension systems.

To order or get more information visit our web site www.tonyfoale.com Initially we are making this software available at a special introductory price of only 50 euros (about US $62 depending on exchange rates). Licencing agreements available for educational establishments etc..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The modern era in suspension design was initiated when Yamaha announced their "cantilever" system, and employed just one suspension unit. Initially the Yamaha version was designed for moto-cross to extend wheel movement, and this led to a wide variety of alternative rear suspension systems by several manufacturers. These quickly spread into most other forms of motorcycling, including racing and road use. Many of these "new" designs also incorporated movement geometries that gave varying degrees of progression.

Whilst these progressive systems offer a much wider range of set-up options, they have also been the source of much confusion. Most people find it more difficult to understand the precise behaviour of the suspension action. It is usually necessary to go through awkward step by step physical measurement and tedious geometric plotting, to get an idea of the characteristics.

This software is designed to make that job easy.

It is only necessary to enter some dimensional data to automatically get detailed information about any suspension design. It becomes a rapid exercise to investigate many different permutations of any design.

This software is very similiar to what some top level teams had been using last season to design linkage.
If you are remotely interested in real world changes that sag has on rake and trail this can help you to understand the effects you are creating to your chassis geometry in a heartbeat.
You can also create linkages with different progression curves to suit the track conditions.
I am so glad I have a linkage, BTW
This program delivers what I have been looking for as far as real world tuning at the track with your laptop.
