I have the head off my 01' 200 because it's being modified.Without pulling the jug off I noticed what I think is crank play by moving the fly wheel and holding/touching the top of the piston. Is this play in the crank I'm feeling/hearing or something normal? What is the proper way of checking this? Also,is it ok to hone the cylinder to remove minor scratches prior to replacing just the rings? Thanks for your replies!

yes you can hone the cylinder.
take the cylinder off and hold the connecting rod and the piston and see if there is any vertical free play. then pull up/down on the rod to see if there's any play in the lower rod bearing. then move the flywheel up/down to see if there's any play in the left crank bearing.
if the crank bearing is bad then replace both bearings and both seals
