Trying to Classify Bikes to race

I have a difficult task, perhaps some of you have similar problems. Our "motocross" club has a mini-bike class that is slowly evolving. Here's the line up:
KTM 65SX ridden by a 9 y.o. (our first full race bike)
KTM 50SX ridden by a 7 y.o
Yamaha TTr 125 ridden by a 12 y.o. girl
Yamaha TTr 90 (x2) ridden by 10 y.o (boy & girl)
Honda XR 70 ridden by 10 y.o.
Chinese 70 (like XR) ridden by 9 y.o. (x 2)
Yamaha PW50 ridden by 8 yr old

There's no pleasing everyone. The father of the KTM65 rider is complaining that the TTR125 is too big for the mini-bike class (frame size). His son is just learning to use the clutch on the KTM. He's also complaining that we shouldn't give the XR70 and smaller KTM a headstart. I'm trying to give some balance to make it fair to all riders, so each kid has a chance at winning. Have any of you had similar disputes? What class do TTR125s ride in in your area? We have one full race bike and a bunch of "play" bikes. Hopefully some of the kids will get KX65s this year and then perhaps we can divide the class into full race and play bikes.
Our next stage up is "Intermediate" which is a mix of 85cc and 100cc MX bikes.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated

TTR125's here run in the 85 class unless it is the L version with bigger wheels then it is only allowed in Supermini or the 125 classes.

That's a pretty diverse line up of bikes to run together and still keep everyone happy, good luck.

When you say 85s are you talking about like YZ85s? A TTR125 would be outclassed by the YZ85s horsepower. a TTR125 only has about 9 h.p. The KTM 65 has 16 hp. Where can I find out about the Supermini class?

TTR125's are in the "mini trail" class at my local tracks. This is basically all 4 stroke non-MX bikes 125cc and below - XR, TTR, etc . . . The local tracks require 3 or 4 bikes to have a class.

Classes at one of our local non-AMA track:

50 PW Shaft (4-8)
50 Oil Injected (4-8)
50 Junior (4-6)
50 Senior (7-8)
65 Junior (7-9)
65 Senior (10-11)
65 Open (7-11)
60/80 Beginner
80 Extra (7-11)
85 Junior (7-11)
85 Senior (12-15)
Schoolboy (12-15)
College Boy (16-24)
Supermini (12-15)

We have a couple series and they are classified as follows:

Pee Wee-little kid beginner class ride what you brought to the track (generally 50's or something similar)

Formula Thunder- up to 150cc four stroke TTR/DRZ/KLX or 124 cc pit bikes, etc or 60cc 2 stroke under 14 inch wheels

Formula Mini- up to 72cc 2 stroke and 160cc four stroke

85 trophy- up to 99cc 2 stroke and 230cc 4 stroke

Of course this is not MX (mini road racing and supermoto)

Yes I'm talking about 85 cc 2 strokes. It is mainly based on bike size, as no one expects them to be competitive. Not sure I would want my child on a PW50 racing on the track with someone on a TTR125, pretty big bike to fall on someone small enough to ride a PW50. The supermini class is full of stock 85's but it also allows the big wheel 85's (CR85 Expert) as well as KX/RM100's and KTM 105's.

Based on the 2006 CMRC rules which I believe are a straight copy of the AMA rules the TTR125 is no longer legal in the 80's class either, this what they state for classes:

50cc class - 0-50 cc 2 stroke or 0-73 cc 4 stroke.
65cc Class - 60-65cc 2 stroke or 0-80cc 4 stroke
85cc class - 60-85cc 2 stroke or 60-100cc 4 stroke

Likely this change is a direct result of making sure we don't end up with the manufactures creating an 80 class full of mini thumpers like the now defunct 125 class.

The spread of bikes you have listed is completely unrealistic to expect them to "race" each other with any sense of actual competition. Perhaps the focus of this class needs to be fun with no staggered starts etc to give the sense of competition. Also in that sense it usually becomes everyone get's a trophy or no one get's a trophy as it's a fun class.

I would group them as follows:
KTM 65SX ridden by a 9 y.o. (our first full race bike)
Yamaha TTr 125 ridden by a 12 y.o. girl
(My son's KX is capable of walking off on a ttr125l. There is actually more power, less weight, better suspension.)

KTM 50SX ridden by a 7 y.o
Yamaha TTr 90 (x2) ridden by 10 y.o (boy & girl)
Honda XR 70 ridden by 10 y.o.
Chinese 70 (like XR) ridden by 9 y.o. (x 2)
(Run these together, the KTM will probably win. If he destroys the rest, put him with the 65.)

Yamaha PW50 ridden by 8 yr old
(Sorry, but this little rocket porbably couldn't keep up if it were opened up to 60cc.)
