That's a reference to the political struggle in Ireland. Most of their early stuff could be categorized as songs of protest against the civil unrest that has plagued Ireland for years.
They've had lots of hits, and gotten lots of airplay over the years. What kind of radio station are you listening to?

If I'm to pick a favorite I'd have to say it's Hawkmoon 269. Your best bet is to check out Amazon.com and look up U2. You can play short clips of some songs from their cds. That might help you figure out which ones you might be hearing on the radio. Good luck with your quest for outstanding music. :thumb:

New Years Day gives me goosebumps. Killer video, too. My favorite albums by them are "War" and "October" and I like the live one, "Under a Blood Red Sky". I like "Gloria" off the first one (I think). Another really cool vid, with them standing on a barge in some harbor, prolly Ireland. It's either shot in B&W or kind of a dingy gray/brown, and it's overcast outside. Man, those were the days-when MTV used to play videos... Thankfully there's MTV2.

The entire Joshua Tree CD is excellent. I still like the old stuff best though.

I also agree that U2 was at its best before the ZOO TV tour. I thought they started going off the deep end after that. But I liked the song Beautiful Day, so I hoping they will have better music in the future. I was a hard core fan in the 80's. I have import albums and videos and Tshirts. They were cool.

lou, Gloria is off their Boy album. I've got everything up to Achtung Baby. I've got bootleg stuff, all sorts of U@. they're tied with Led Zeppelin for my #1 ALLTIME favorite band.
They get immunity for any political nonsense they spout off about. I don't care. And I'll never claim a favorite song for either band. No such thing.
They're the only, ONLY, celebrities that I'd ever actually want to meet. My dream is to see them in an intimate little dive just playing whatever the audience wants to hear. Covers, super old stuff, whatever.
I think the albums right after Achtung Baby are my least favorites, but I still have yet to get the newest one. I will some day. Because I know there's probably a few gems that don't get airtime.
