Come on now, I know some of you rode the UEA Enduro. Where are the ride reports? Us poor saps who couldn't make it are really looking forward to some write ups.
We missed you and you missed out on a good race. I rode with Tony Santero and we both decided to sign up 'B' for the 2004 season ... ya know, so we can get the full masochistic experience and all.
1st loop was relatively easy but I thought it was a little more challenging than the Fun 4 made the 1st loop out to be. Very rocky. I dropped a second on the 1st loop, which I was very happy about ... maybe my timekeeping is improving after all. Tony was righ there the whoel loop and we also helped out a mini desert rider who was on our minute ... we had a fun row ... minute 94 !!! Over 388 riders showed up on Sunday !!!!!!!!!!! I did manage to crash twice on this loop .... sometimes it just happens that way.
2nd loop had some tricky hillclimbs here and there and was faster than the 1st loop. We dropped around 3 minutes on one check and a few seconds here and there on the others. Tony was right there and we were feeling good going into the 3rd loop.
3rd loop started about 2 miles from camp. Speeds very fast ... some 60 MPH and 42 MPH. Not all of it was technically difficult, but the stuff that wasn't was very, very fast. Many guys in the club complained about running out of gears and whatnot ... full-on desert race for significant portions of the 3rd loop. And the technical stuff was pretty tricky ... they ran us through parts of the trials area of Cougar Buttes. A few tight waterfalls and several large, sttep rockfaces to tackle. Amazing to me, really ... that I was able to get up some of it. Put a big smile on my face ... until I crashed again about 10 miles in and fell backward about 6 feet into a ditch. When I got up my legs would not bend (cramped), I had a front flat tire, and my bike was resting in a really badspot. Needless to say I dropped about 30 minutes on the 3rd loop alone, crashing again about 5 miles later and destroying my front fender. Tony stopped to help me when I crashed the 1st time (thanks for that dude) and then left me in the dust ... I think he posted a pretty good score ... even with stopping to help and all.
I signed up 'B' and got exactly what I was looking for: I pushed my envelope but still finished, and I came away in one piece at the end of the day. Now I just need a new fender and a new tube, plus a few Tylenol.
I think Danny Schul did real well, at least that's what I heard.
It was fun, I was down 1 minute going into the 3rd loop and I think I dropped 15 on that one. 3rd loop terrain was not as technical as usual some of it was Enduro terrain but most of it was flat and fast, my bike or I just couldn't get going much over 60 so I probably got smoaked by the Dez racers with the geared up bikes unless they blew some checks on the first 2 loops. I talked to the UEA guys on mon. and they said they had alot of complaints on the 1st loop I don't remember it being that hard but I guess people had a hard time on it.
Wow, both bumped up to B riders huh! You guys are brave. I was really wanting to race this one, they always put on a good race. It just wasn't in the cards.
Looks like I'm probably going to sit out most of the district stuff this year. With the wife in her last year of Nursing School, and riding most of the club events, something just has to give :(. Oh well, I live though your guys' ride reports for now.
Sounds like you turned in some awsome results for the first two loops, and just finishing the 3rd is very impressive.
Tony, don't let the word get out to the club that your riding B District cou*move em up*gh. *L*
Well, sorry to say it, but my first enduro ride in awhile was a dismal failure. I tipped over twice within the first three miles, and my riding in between was terminally slow. I waited for about 15 minutes for the other riders to pass, and then continued to the first check and went back to camp. It wasn’t pretty. The first loop (the beginning anyway) would be fairly easy for a C rider, but I’d hardly call it a D “family fun” first loop.
The rest of the day, however, was great. I met a couple of riders from the OTHG (vet motocross club), one with whom I’ve diced with many times. I always came out ahead in those moto sessions, but this guy is a much better enduro rider than I am (but who isn’t).
I also met up with Thumbs and Eel during the first loop break. A quick check of Eel’s card revealed an excellent score (to that point) and I’m sure Thumbs was doing well also.
Finally, there was James “Paparazzi” Ivey lurking on a hillside, taking pictures of everyone as they went by. You never know where this guy might pop up.
All in all, it was great to be out in action again (even if it was slow action).
